Yes, I realize this is a much discussed subject, but now it’s in federal courts (Florida) and I have a problem with that. If my husband is trying to let me die after 15 years of being on a tube, and I told him yes and my parents have no documented proof otherwise, then I’d be ticked that this is even getting to court.
It sets a horrible precedent.
I mean do you (any of you) right now think you’ll ever be on a tube for 15 years? She was so young when it happened. I seriously doubt she realized this was going to happen to her and told her parents “Hey Mom, Dad, if I ever get stuck on a tube, let me live forever and ever, ok?”
Although I feel for the parents who are losing a child. But to keep her alive, I think is sick. Still those are my opinions on her.
The opinion of allowing a COURT to decide family choices?!?!?!?!? What’s next pro-choice?
This is wrong, just my thoughts.. yours?

Re: Terry (the lady in Florida) Tube or no Tube?
I didn't vote because I don't feel I can really go with any of those choices.
I don't know who has more of the right to decide her fate, but it definitely isn't the government. I do think it's cruel to sustain her life when she's not really living. I also think it's cruel to starve a woman to death. I think that some other form of Euthanasia would be preferable, and more humane.
So I guess my answer is - The family needs to take pity on this woman and end this suffering one way or another, but not by removing the tube. And the Government should keep its nose out of it.
Once again, Congress has nothing bigger to worry about?

It's been 15 years!
heck even after 5, I wouldnt curse my hubby. But I understand what you're saying.
It's not his motives I'm questioning.. its the idea of a court deciding her fate. If he didnt have a woman would it change your mind about how a court should or shouldnt make our decisions?

This is the thing that's upsetting me the most- that she is going to starve to death. I think that's horrible.

See I agree with this.. but the general public has big issues with putting humans 'to sleep'.. hence the hate of doctor kavorkian (sp?) etc.
I personally would rather be put out of my misery than to starve, but I'd rather starve than suffer 15 years in living (literally) hell on earth.

See this is what i think
If she can;t feel anything, then she's not 'suffering', so she dens't have to be killed.
if she CAN feel something...IMAGINE the pain of starving/dehydrating to death over a week!

Rainmama I agree with you 100% First of all what the hell is the paretns definition of life...breathing does not in my opinion consttitute life. This poor woman has virtually no brain function or joy in her life. She's confined to a hospital bed and can onyl be fed intravenously. I'm sorry but that is not living...not for her or for her husband...Not to mention the stress and money associated with keeping her alive and bathed etc...
I do not think the court should even touch this one...what kind of precedent is right!!!!
I beleieve in things like Dr. Kevorkian...If one wants to end thier own life let them...it's theirs to choose.
Ladies this shows you the importance of having a living will...

If she can't feel anything, what's the point of keeping her alive? Don't you think she might be happier in Heaven?
If she CAN feel something, then she probably *is* suffering, and we should do something to alleviate that! I agree, starvation is *not* the way to go, but this poor woman needs help.

Question
So lets say you couldn't 'feel' anything and had no brain function (hence no feeling). You can't communicate, don't even realize you ARE alive.
Why would you want to be alive? Is that alive?
See for me.. if my body is on this earth but *I* (the essense of who I am, my soul - if you need a term) am gone, then all I would be doing is making my parents suffer. My dad and I are close. I can't imagine making him suffer and watching my shell (my body) waste away. My father has told me he would haunt me for eternity if I let him vegitate like that. It goes against our beliefs that we are here for a purpose and when it's our time to go, it's our time to go. Keeping us alive artificaially (like this for nearly 2 decades) is going against nature and 'the plan'.

I just don't think hr husband should have the decision. When he got another woman, he gave up his rights as her husband as far as I'm concerned, so it would then go to her family, and they're saying keep her alive. The truth is we have no idea WHAt she can and can't feel.

15 years!!!!! It's human nature to move on, you can't blame him for that (or I can't).. but I'll go with you here..
Question: When is it over? So lets say this guy is cheating on this wife, but she doesn't know it, she gets into a car accident and becomes brain dead, does that mean he shouldn't have any right to pull the plug (god help that sounds crude, but I had no better way of saying that).
Lets assume he actually has feelings for her, but the marriage was bumpy at that TIME in their lives. He still cares for her and knows this is what she would want, does he automatically become unqualified to make a choice because he had an affair?
They were married when she got into this state. It was LATER that he moved on (which most shrinks will say is HEALTHLY and natural).
If he became GAY and had a partner would that make you feel differently?
I think some people get caught up on the so called 'affair' and forget that it's this woman's body and life that's much more important.
If he really didn't give a hoot, he'd pass her off. The suit, I know, I know, it's his money as long as he doesn't remarry. If he's greedy he won't, but ponder this, where do you think he's coming up for the cash to pay for the lawsuits? The Medical is covered by the insurance, but what about the defense costs.
I don't think this is about money or another woman, it's about putting Terry out of her misery. And for her family, ALL of her family, to move on!

Im afraid this may start to define 'what is life'.
I am pro-choice. I do want children and I won't abort my child, but I also know that had I been stupid enough to slip up and get drugged and pregnant or if I had been raped and become pregnant I would have ended that pregancy as quickly as possible. To me it's not life at 6 weeks old. I am against late 2nd and all 3rd trimester abortions, but that's my CHOICE! and I feel all women should have their own say about their bodies.
This case would test the idea of who can choose if it's life (brain dead) or not life (let her go on).

All I can say is if I was in the same position. I would want the tube removed, and die. That will be stated in my living will. If I'm brain dead, and their is no sign what so ever of me recovering please put me, and my family out of this misery. I don't want them visiting me, being upset that I'll never be the same ever again, or taking care of my lifeless body.Thats no way to live. Plus I don't want my fw, and my son to see me like this. I'm sorry if I offended anybody. This is how I feel.

I have to say I wouldnt want to live like that. But I feel bad for the parents. Why doesnt her husband just turn over his guardianship to the parents? It is not like she is on respirators.

because then he doesn't get to keep what's left of her 1.3 million dollar medical malpractice lawsuit money.
I am troubled by the fact that Terri was in this state since 1990. In 1992, her husband testified at the malpractice lawsuit that he wanted money so that he could care for his wife for the rest of her life.
Once she (HE) won the money, he ordered that all care for her be stopped (no physical therapy, not too many visitors allowed, no TEETH BRUSHING).
Suddenly, in 1998, after he had a child with another woman, he remembered that Terri said she didn't want to be kept alive on life support. Of course, if he divorces her, he doesn't get any money. If she dies while they are still married, he officially inherets her lawsuit money to spend as he wishes- not just on her medical care and legal fees.
IMO, this is not someone who should be making decisions for her.
