AWKWARD!!

I just wrote 'We are so glad you were able to come and join us to celebrate on our special day.' and more stuff like that. Since I wasn't thanking them for a gift, I sometimes wrote 'Thank you for joining us at our wedding.'

Remember, people have up to a year after the wedding to give a gift (we just got a wedding gift last week actually).

How someone has the nerve to attend a wedding and not even give ANYTHING as a gift is beyond my understanding. Personally I wouldnt even send a thank you to those people. 'Thank you' for what? For making me waste $ on your cheap ***? And now making me waste $ on postage? People like that don't deserve to be thanked. JMO!!

ITA, but you still have to thank them for coming and eating and having a good time, at your expense ! Etiquette says they have to get a thank you. Besides, they may send a gift later, maybe...

I agree completely with what Sandra did, that's exactly what I would do.

As an aside, I personally feel like if someone was important enough to be invited to your wedding, they deserve being given the benefit of the doubt if they didn't bring a gift. Maybe they forgot it at home, maybe they are waiting for their next paycheck to be able to afford it, maybe they're still looking for the right item, maybe they have stuff going on and just couldn't do it for some reason you don't know about.

I would never do it on purpose, and I haven't, but as a guest, I would hope that a friend or family member would give me the benefit of the doubt if I couldn't bring a gift for some reason. It's expensive to attend someone's wedding!!

This just reminds me of the argument I have with FH all the time about 'making back' the money we're spending on the wedding in gifts. I personally think you shouldn't EXPECT anything from people, and that you're throwing a celebration. There shouldn't be any expectation attached to it except to share the day and the occasion with people and people will do what they can for you. We put so much emphasis on money in NY and on LI particularly... people aren't allowed to just bring a token, they have to 'cover their plate', and I think that's BS. Spend what you can afford, I don't think it's fair to expect guests to pay for your wedding.

Maybe it's naive, but I still think people deserve a thank you for making the effort to share your day.

Just thank them for 'sharing your special day'. I have a few people who I know will not be able to give a gift. We have many out of town guests who are spending a fortune to attend, and my Aunt is going to house sit for us while we are on our HM, which is her gift to us.

Very well said.
You have to send a thank you, as much as it may be painful!

There were a few people who came to my wedding and did not give a gift. Was I disappointed or maybe shocked? Absolutely. However, I knew these certain people were not in the best financial situation. And I appreciated them traveling to attend our wedding. Two of them claim to have left the envelopes in the car, but I haven't received anything and don't expect to. Irregardless, the most important thing is that these people came to support us and celebrate with us doing the best time of our lives. I sent thank yous and wrote something very similar to Sandra.

I completely agree with you. In todays economy alot of people really dont have alot of extra money. I am having a wedding to celebrate our marriage not to make the money back that we spent on it. FH and I have talked about this and if people dont bring a gift/money we are ok with it. We just want all our family and friends to celebrate our love and happiness with us.

I would definitely send a thank you card anyway. Just thank them for being there to share in your day. Maybe they'll send you something later and just didn't have the money to give you anything at the time and were embarassed to say anything.

ITA

But - should you wait a little bit, just to see if someone sends you something later on? Like, if you write a thank you and then they send something after that, do you write another thank you?
