did they send a gift? if they sent a gift but didn't attend, you simply thank them for the gift.

you only need to send a thank you if they sent a gift. so I would mention the gift and tell them how thoughtful it was, and thank them for it.

Thank them for the gift that they sent. Then you can say something along the lines of sorry you weren't able to share in our joy, we missed having you there with us.

i agree with the last post... thank them for the gift and then say something about how you are sorry they weren't able to be there or that you missed having them there.... you could even personalize it a little bit ' sorry you weren't there to see uncle walter doing the conga line' LOL that was bad, but you get the point...

Thank you for your XXXXX. We missed you on August 6, but look forward to sharing many more happy occasions together.
