thank you notes

What is the etiquette for giving thank you cards to people who can't come to the wedding but send a gift? Do you send a thank you note right away or do you wait until after the wedding and you get your pictures?

Also, do we cash the check now or wait until after the wedding?

If I had to do it over again, I'd send the thank you out now and cash the check. Don't let it sit. We didn't do the picture thank yous. Got blank note cards with 'Mr. & Mrs. X' on the front of the card, so I can use them for more than just the thank yous. Definitely say something to whomever sent you the card/check, so they aren't wondering.
