i had my final fitting last week ... my dress is already paid for except for the alterations which came to $418 (which includes tax) .... but the guy told me i MUST pay in cash .... but um ... if i'm paying cash, why is there tax?

i tried ... he said no ... i went to princess bridals and they're the biggest @ssholes at that store (for many many MANY reasons) so i guess i should've expected to get screwed (sort of)
Barb - i'd prefer credit because i don't want to pay upfront ... i want to use the cash i have towards the other vendors that DO take tax off if i pay cash (which is most of them!)
thanks for your responses

Re: the bridal store
The same thing is happening to me. My alterations are $488 and they are charging me tax and want cash too. I didn't realize it until after I left but when I go back for the second fitting I'm going to question the tax too.

Re: the bridal store
they shouldn't be charging you tax if you're paying cash. that's absurd!

Re: the bridal store
Whatever I have paid in cash so far the tax has been taking off. If they wanted that much in cash Id def request no tax if not they wouldnt get that much cash from me, maybe half. Is this a standard amount for alterations? that seems high

Re: the bridal store
That does seem odd. My place wants cash too, but didn't mention anything about adding tax. I guess I'll find out Thursday on my last fitting. But I would think if they're specifically asking for cash they would not include tax.

i have no idea what's normal but with these f-ers, i wouldn't be surprised for a second if i was over-charged
... it was $275 for alterations + $75 for the bustle + freakin' tax

Re: the bridal store
Cash doesn't always mean tax free. In fact, it shouldn't mean tax free at all. Any sale should have sales tax attached, cash or not. You never know, he *might* be reporting the sale and you should assume so anyway even if he acts shifty and jerky.
Although, chances are, like others said, he's not reporting the sale and in that same vain, since he's ripping the gov't, he should give you a break, but most (I won't say all b/c I know there are some good ppl out there) business owners are in it for the profit, so you almost have to expect the raw-ish deal.
Edited for spelling

I went to Princess Bridals when I was looking for a FG dress and they really are a bunch of a-holes. The woman was so rude. her exact words 'I can't believe you're thinking of putting a little girl in wine and red, that's terrible' I couldn't believe her.

Re: the bridal store
I'm pretty sure there isn't supposed to be tax on this legally. I had a friend who fought this because apparently it's not really legal since it's a service or something.

this is true - they took the tax off of mine bc its a service - its a trick they often try to pull on people (which is why most bridal salons require alterations be paid in cash)
