the dollar dance?

Original post by rfilipofornow

has anyone else ever heard of this? a bunch of us are getting married at work and we constantly discuss planning and whatnot and the other day, someone mentioned the 'dollar dance' where all the guys drop like, anything between $1 - $20 into a bowl to dance with the bride for 20 seconds and the girls do to the same to dance with the groom. Now, I've been to a whole bunch of weddings, but i've never seen or heard of this!! i'm currently on the west coast and they said it's a west coast/midwest thing, but i was wondering if anyone else ever heard of it??? supposedly, people CLEAN UP this way

They did this at my cousins wedding in PA. They donated all the money to their church. It was cute.

wow - I just learned something new! it was on my DJ's list of group dances too, but it was right next to 'cotton eyed joe' so i thought it was referring to that old song we used to dance to at sweet 16s... cent, five cent, ten cent, dolla

now i feel pretty dumb

Yes, I thought it was a Spanish tradition. The men usually pin dollars on the bride for a dance. I'm not sure if I want ppl pinning dollars on my expensive gown, but there are variations that don't involve pinning. FH and I talked about it briefly, but we're not sure if we want that....

That is an eastern european tradition not and American thing as far as I know. I know this because I had that at my wedding and it is like an honor to dance with the bride so you throw money in a basket. As far as throwing money at the bride and groom while they are dancing that is because years and years ago in eastern european countries the bands were not paid to play at weddings so the money that was thrown at the bride and the groom was for the band and the money that was in the basket to dance with the bride was for the couple.

This is how we do it anyhow!

I know filipinos do that and they pin the money to the brides veil...supposedly it's a good way to make some extra $$$

Yes--I know this is a Filipino tradition and my cousin did it at her wedding last year.

JMO--I think it's tacky though and am quite adamant about not having it. My parents hate the idea as well. I know people have made a decent amount doing this, but I just find it to be in poor taste.

Is also a hispanic tradition. They have it at every wedding I have been to. One of my cousins made $500 dollars.

Well the verson I heard of was not at all like this I was on a cruise and they did what they call a dollar dance but it was more like a electric slide type of thing..... and the music went something like .....Cent -Five Cent- Ten Cent - Dollar and it's all with the hips lol it was actually very fun and my dad want to do it at the wedding thank god for video

but IMO I agree w/ the rest of the girls about it being sort of tacky......

There is a dance like the electric slide called the dollar dance as well.

I feel it is inappropriate to call something tacky if it is part of someone's heritage or tradition.

Exactly. Thank you Milerose....I think the main goal is for everyone to enjoy the wedding

I think it's a Greek tradition. Although, I have never seen a bowl invovled. Normally the money is thrown around.

No, the Greek tradition is just to throw money on the floor while everyone is dancing. The Dollar Dance is when people either put money into a bowl or pin it on the bride and grooms clothes and then they get to dance with them for a certain amount of time. But that one isnt Greek.
