The Dream Thread - share and discuss

Lunatrek:
In answer to your question, yes I do take over my dreams from time to time. Mostly fighting.

I've loved medieval type things since I could crawl. Dad got really into the whole asian thing and brother learned sword and throwing technics. Me, none. I was a girl and frankly too busy trying to figured out who to take apart the car.

Instead in my dreams I battle. The staff is usually my weapon of choice but in some dreams yes I take over with a sword. Taking over my dreams was one of the things I learned early in childhood.

As Yaboo says.. dreams often reflection real life emotions or actions. Memories, feelings or events. I had a very harsh childhood. My real mother can frankly be slowly baked over a fire and still never satisfy my need for justice. The many things she put me through were reflected in my dreams. My brother would call over to me via our intercom system to try to wake me up (my mother used to lock me in my room). During the day we’d discuss my dreams. He helped me imagine defenses and actions to fight off evil. I don’t know if I would have survived my childhood without him. On many levels he was my savior.

I wrote out one particularly strange dream for a class (speech) assignment I recently had. Let me see if I can find it.

strange wacky - i usually scream someone else's name.

I have been known to scream so loud (not lately) that my father has had to wake me up. Once he thought I was hurt b/c I was screaming his name so loud.

Wow sassy. No I scream my name. Usually its during periods where I feel like Im losing control. So I guess I need to vocalize who I am.

Youre probably afraid poppies going to leave you.

Again, Wow - this is a really interesting thread!

Lunatrek - I never knew anyone else who had tornado dreams! (I thought it was just me!) Those dreams have to mean something!

Xelindrya - your plague dream was REALLY freaky. I think I would have been afraid to sleep if I had that dream. Also - you're an excellent writer!

To branch off onto another topic - the 6th sense. I personally believe that we all have a 6th sense/an ability to communicate mentally to some degree. WithThisRing, Sassy and Xelindrya - to me, it sounds like you have communicated with some of your loved ones who have passed. (There go my goosebumps again!)

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

I'm so glad we are discussing this. I keep having (over the past few years) a dream that I see a plane crash. It's no one that I know and I'm not on it but I will be either in my car or walking and I see it in the near distance. I never actually see the plane hit, I see it going down and it always goes down behind something, like a house or something in the distance. I then see flames and black smoke. I sometimes to to get to it but always wake up before I do

What could this mean?????

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

I thought I was the only one who had dreams that were so real feeling yet so utterly abnormal (not that I mean abnormal in a bad way, mind you). I've had some really horrific dreams and I tend to dream every night. I don't remember the last time I had a dream that was good, i.e., that I woke up from feeling anything akin to happy. The majority of my most realistic dreams revolve around being left by the person I love. Now, it's FH; in the past, it was the last man that I lived with and thought I would marry (many years ago). The dreams always end with me hysterical crying and usually with FH waking me up because I am really crying. I also have vivid dreams about a past violent experience and FH has to wake me up because I'm crying, screaming and fighting back, which usually means I wind up beating him up in the process.

The rest of the time, my dreams are just strange, i.e., the giant sheep in the bowling alley standing in one of the lanes at which I threw my jewelry.

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

It's so comforting to know how many of us have these types of dreams.
Betty - wow the plane crash sends me shivers.

janshari, do you have a fear of being a lone perhaps?

Since we're all being open, I'll share the rest of my nightmare from last night and other experiences.
I copied it from the FM I sent Lunatrek.

Don't read past this if you're sensitive about 9-11..........

I've seen things in dreams that later on happen - nothing meaningful just little insignificant things for example like my sis doing something like combing her hair at a specific time, and in real life at that time, she is combing her hair.......

Also babies - I used to dream of babies a lot. Almost every time the next morning someone died or got sick real bad

When I dreamt of Len getting decapitated, next morning good friend had unexpected C-section. Strange.......................

Last night, we were in a building - tall and the building collapsed like 9-11. One could say I am haivng dreams b/c of 9-11 but the whole 9-11 ordeal did not give me nightmares and I don't have anyone close that died from it.
But in the dream I am in a building and it starts shaking, we look out the window, and we realize our building is falling.
As we are falling I say 'Everyone - pray and repent -we're dying !!!'
So I start praying - then fade - blackness
Next we're all in a bare room - no idea where we are but we KNOW we are dead. And we were waiting for our judgement.

IT was such a looooong dream -- seemed to last all night.
In the end, after being summonned and climbing then walking through dark corridors, I was being 'interviewed' about my thoughts, etc. . . and I had said I wanted to be alive again then changed my mind, b/c I didn't want to return to life w/o my hubby.

I can't even remember how the dream ends, but I know I didn't get back alive.

LOL

I like to float in my dreams.. but after awhile I felt 'disconnected' too much. Once I learned they are my dreams, I like to walk around. Change sceneries and enjoy my dreams. I get pissy when they go bad. NORMALLY I can walk through a door and it's over. Since walking through closed doors normally change the 'scene' for me, if the dream has no string of thought (ie, just random thoughts).

I REALLY hated those reoccuring dreams when I was a kid. They were always nightmares and would start right where they finished and would continue to torment me.

They say we lose our nature for nightmares as we get older because we lose our imagination and belief in the unreal. Unfortunately... I still have a vivid imagination. But it's great for adventure games too.

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

Agreed my imaginiation is quite vivid

you know whats funny, since you mention DOORS..............

I can't remember EVER going through an actual Door in any dream....

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

Sassy, I definitely have fears of being alone and no longer being loved. That's not a surprise to me that I dream about those things, although one would think that since I'm conscious of my feelings about it, it wouldn't be in my sub-conscious. However, the intensity with which I dream is very scary to me. And the fact that I only seem to dream about scary, sad, harmful, violent, etc. things, with a seeming inability to dream about anything happy truly disturbs me.

Sassy Posted:

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

Hmmm, I get your drift now.
It would disturb me too. Like ' I know this already, why do my dreams have to remind me constantly throw it in my face' kind of feeling.

But trust me happy dreams don't always come with happy reality. I actually get scared when a dream is too happy, it's like doom and gloom is calling, if that makes any sense.

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

I always think of door.. Nice large ornate ones. Wood ones, steel ones, submarine type ones.. everything. I always keep a store of them in my mind. It’s my Number One trick to getting ‘out’ of sticky situations.

Water.. now that bites.

There are no doors underwater. I drowned when I was 8. Clinically dead for a few seconds. Stupid kid knocked me in and I hit my head on the side and my back on the bottom of the pool. Knocked all the air out of me. Drowning again is a big fear for me.

I had TONS of 9/11 nightmares. Mostly not nightmares but reliving what I saw. Sometimes I would be the people I saw falling to their deaths. Air rushing at my face screaming in my ears and other than that..just silence as my own heart beat was all I could hear and my mind screaming no.

Then there’s the airplane. I was right under the 1WTC when the second one came. I saw it VERY clearly. What really made it worse was there was NO TV coverage that close. No photos nothing. Nothing to make it real for me. It seemed to me I was the only one who saw what I saw and my mind refused to believe it could really have happened so I dreamt it over and over and over trying to find a flaw, but there was none. I know it was real. I HATED that!!! Finally CBS has a special 9/11 that they showed on the 6month anniversary. Those two filmmakers with the firefighters. One was standing right behind me when the second airplane hit. He got that image. I was talking to my dad as we watched the special. I was walking him through where I was when it was all happening. My whole family and my FH around a table watching the TV. When that part came on I choked up and said “Oh my God, that’s it, that’s exactly it.” There is actually one photo. It made the cover of time. After that show those dreams stopped.

Unfortunately its been 2 years and the dreams still exist. I wake up so very sad. I know they are only dreams and their normal for what I’ve been through, but they still are tough on a heart.

My 9/11 dreams, if possible, are worse that my experience and frankly that was bad enough. Mostly it’s the ‘what ifs’. Being trampled is NOT a fun experience, but I tend to wonder how bad it could have ended up. I get those nightmares when my injuries flare up. As long as there is pain, there are the dreams.

And those BAST*ARD people say I’m having a normal reaction. This is normal? This ain’t right, not at all. But I have to live with it. I just keep up with my physical therapy which keeps the pain down and try to think WEDDING stuff. Much better to dream about weddings than death.

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

9/11 was traumatic... no doubt you'll have dreams about it for the rest of your life. My DH went through pretty much the same thing as you did, Veronica.

I think we were all born with a 6th sense... some of us just are more 'tapped in' than others.

I used to have recurring dreams (or what I even thought were out of body experiences) about an old Native American man with long white hair. He was always leading me somewhere. During that time, I had a 'heart to heart' about my father with my mom, who never really liked to talk about him (not the 'gory details', anyway). She said to me.. 'You would have loved your grandfather, he had this long stark white hair...' I almost PASSED OUT when she told me that! I've never met my grandfather (my father's father, the Native American one). I know he's still watching me. Sure wish we could communicate better, besides just dreams....

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

My father’s family is American Indian. Heh.

I don’t know about 6th sense. I’m just close to those I love. I mean L O V E love love. My brother can’t hide a thing from me. I’ve been known to be woken up at 1am to call him and just say “dude, chill, life is good and we’ll all make it, now to go bed you’re annoying me”. I hang up and go to sleep. About 4 out of 5 times I don’t remember calling – I like my sleep. He always calls me back in the morning and thanks me. He’s had a rough time lately. Sometimes he forgets life is to be lived, hard or not and people love you no matter who you are. I like to be his life line.

My father’s pain is another trigger. My father has to be about the happiest go lucky man you will EVER know! He’s so goofy happy it’s nearly painful. When someone hurts my dad I know. Instantly, I don’t question that feeling at all. When Dad’s worried, hurt, angry or sad, I know. I call and we talk. At the end of the call he usually says “you knew didn’t you” I always say no.

I have a very reasonable explanation I used for this. My brother, I was locked in my room by my mother for days, literally, on end. Only the intercom was my communication to the outside world. My brother used to talk to me via the intercom (he wasn’t allowed to let me out). We really go to know eachother. I just knew when he was sad after awhile. Dad, he served in the Military, Navy. He was out 9 months out of the year. This was before internet and cheap long distance. We’d send cassette tapes back and forth to talk to him. When he was home I practically lived and breathed his presence. I used to sleep in his Tshirts with his scent on him. I knew his every emotion. Anger, sadness, happiness, annoyance. You could say I studied him. I as obsessed with my father and brother. They were all I had.

They say when I’m angry. Really angry (which isn’t often) they know. My brother says it’s like the light in the world is shut off (ain’t he cute) and my father says it’s like the world cries at once (melodramatic). Either way, they will find a way to get a hold of me.

Distance doesn’t seem to diminish this at all. Both instinctively knew I survived 9/11. Mostly because I was so afraid and so sad and so scared and angry all at the same time. My sister in law kept beating up my brother for being so nonchalant. My father even took off to get in his vote (it was primaries for school district). They just knew. Later they told family that if I were dead, I’d want them to live on (Which is true) but they knew I’m too stubborn to die. heh.

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

WOW, that is wonderful that you have that kind of relatinship and 'instinct' feeling with your dad and brother.
It reminds me of my Mom.
She could ALWAYS tell when something was wrong. Here is a story that by the way, has nothing to do with dreams...........

I feel she helped my sister bake my wedding cake.
My Mom used to bake cakes on the side, she was well known in the community for her talent.
Her cakes were like no other.
She taught herself and later on taught my sister.
My sister had never actually baked a wedding cake ever, just smaller cakes like for baby showers, birthdays, etc, usually a few layers a couple tiers that's it.

After my Mom passed, I said I knew my Mom would bake and decorate a very special cake for me. So since she was no longer here, I would NOT have a wedding cake, everyone tried to convince me otherwise, I said NO WAY. My DH was very supportive.

My sister moved in with my Dad about a month afterwards.
She brought all her stuff into his house, dressers, etc, , so her room consisted of stuff only that were in the house she and I lived in.

One day cleaning out her drawers, she found pictures, totally detailed of a cake that was obviously my Mother's work.
No one remembers my Mom ever making this cake.
But there it was closeup shots and all.
My sister was convinced my Mother somehow put those pictures there for her as a sign she MUST make this cake for me for my wedding.

Remember, my sis has NEVER done a wedding cake before - she is a doctor.

Lo and behold, my Father finds in the basement, hidden away in a corner of the storage room a huge bag FULL of supplies that are specific to the things used to decorate this cake, pillars, stands, etc. . .
Even he said, this must have been being saved for your wedding cake.

Even I had to admit, my Mom sent these pictures and supplies for me.

When my sisster was doing the cake, she was so nervous, but then she said a calm came over her and she felt my Mother guiding her through the process.

I know this is way too long now, but the end result was a beautiful cake my sister never knew she had the talent for. It looked good, and tasted good.

Here it is. You tell me can someone who's never done more than a 3 tier cake pull this off on her first try? Believe it or not...................

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

Oddly enough, no.

We believe (my close family) that death is part of life. It’s a release from this hell on earth. Nothing is fair here, everything is painful and nothing is right. Death is the only true release from the damnation we have been made to serve.

I know that sounds very melodramatic but it’s what keeps us going. We live to die. Our only goal in life is to be the person we know we must be. So when we die we are grateful. Grateful to have given all we could, lived all we have, experienced what we have, learned what we could and taught others the way.

When my grandmother died I was also pretty much ok with it. I didn’t start to cry until I felt my father crying. We were at there burial site. I stood behind him with a hand on his shoulder. When he shook, I felt my world crack in pain. For three days the rosary, the wake & the funeral, the cousins sat outside and talked about grandma. We all told our stories, we laughed , we cried and we complained. We let her go.

When my grandfather died my father and I were both too far to make it to the funeral. We spoke to eachother instead. As is our tradition we talked about grandpa and what he meant to us. Good and bad. The love and the anger, the joy and the disappointments, the happiness and the regret. We loved him but not blindly. He had his faults, we all do. We let him go.

I know that sounds cold, but we believe our dead don’t want us to dwell on them. Instead they are always there. There are times I say “boy grandma got me out of that one”. I think our ancestors look down on us. With that, my ancestors aren’t exactly my type of people. Im sure I don’t live up to their standards, but I know I make my grandma & grandpa proud.

Grandpa ‘blessed’ my FH & I just one month before he died. We were visiting San Antonio. I told my father and my FH I was going down there to say goodbye to my grandfather. FH blew it off. My father listened. Dad made the trip too. I was right.

No I don’t dream of them. I just ‘feel’ them from time to time. It’s a nice warm feeling. You just smile and go about your business.
Sassy Posted:

Re: The Dream Thread - share and discuss

I know that nice warm feeling
Sometimes I feel like I feel her right behind me, then I look and no one is there.
My sister said at one point she felt my Mom push her hair back.

I do get the dreams too - don't know why but they make me feel better.Maybe those who need the dreams will receive them?????

I also believe that death in a way is a release from 'hell' on Earth. No more pain, sorrow, etc. . .
Death is not something to be afraid of. When someone dies, I don't feel sorry for the deceased, I feel sorry for myself b/c I will miss them. I feel sorry for those that love them that can't be with them anymore.

But I believe spirits live on. . .
Not sure to what capacity but I feel they never leave their loved ones 100%.

As for me, I am not afraid to die, I am however afraid to leave my DH, and I am afraid of HOW I will die. I'd prefer to go quietly in my sleep from my brain anurism(sp) which I'm pretty convinced is how I'm going to die.
