But- I always feel its kind of awkward when you are trying to talk to someone across the table from you.
I went to a lovely wedding last July where she had low centerpieces with hydrangias and tea lights- absolutely gorgeous and I could still talk to the couple across the table!

Re: The Great Debate: High vs, Low centerpieces?
Well..High CP are more expensive and people say that you cannot see the other people at the table..But they may add a more formal look
I am partial to Low ones..that is what we are having..they were less expensive and I wasn't really into CP
These are just my opinions!

I was just at my future brother in laws wedding and they had low wide centerpieces. I could see anyone on the other side of the table. I think tall centerpieces not only bring elegance, but enable al people at the table to view each other. Of course, that depends on what tall centerpieces you get.

Well, high ones have an impact when you walk in, but not so much once you're at your table. Low ones you can look admire all night. But I also think it depends on the room.

My hall has pretty high ceilings;...does it matter? Also, I want everything to be pretty formal?
I don't know. I didn't think these decisions would be so hard. It is true though, you can't enjoy low centerpieces when you're sitting there

I agree. Everytime I attend attend a wedding where there are tall centerpieces I always have a hard getting a good view of what is going on and even to have a conversation with someone sitting across from me.

for me it depends on the height of the ceiling

Re: The Great Debate: High vs, Low centerpieces?
I think it totally depends on the room, the ceilings and the tables. Our room was small, with long oval tables. We opted for long and low CPs...the high ones would have been too much in that room. Meanwhile the other room at the WM is a lot larger with long oval tables - this room looks best with high CPs.

Re: The Great Debate: High vs, Low centerpieces?
Well, I don't so much think it has to do with the height of the ceilings, just the feel of the room. We had ridiculously high ceilings in the Bourne, and I still think the low centerpieces were the best option. I have seen the room set up with high ones and I just didn't like them.
I will repeat again what my florist said to me when I was at Border's with her, 'Stand up, you see those tall bookcases? Well, now sit down, they disappear, right?' And she made her point. High centerpieces are great for when you walk in the room and look around, but at the actual table, you lose them completely.
ETA: Here were our centerpieces. They were low and FULL. I thought it was more important for people to see the whole centerpiece, rather than just the underneath of it all night.
Anyway, I don't know what I'm putting so much energy into saying LOW centerpieces. I just think it all depends on the room. Try visiting your hall when it's set up for a wedding a couple of times to get some ideas.

Low CP can be admired all night long, and do not interfere with conversation across the table. High CP look great when you walk in the room, but while sitting at the table IMHO all they do is interfere with the conversation because you can't see through it. Also, while sitting at the table the only part of the high CP you see is the bottom, not the top with all the flowers, and isn't that what you're paying for??

Lows are cheaper and out of the way during conversation.

Re: The Great Debate: High vs, Low centerpieces?
I am biased since I have two storey ceilings and really wanted to take advantage of them. My suggestion: You could have both. High Centerpieces with some flowers at the base. We are having a clear glass trumpet vase filled with orchids and then having hydrangeas circling the base.
High centerpieces can be designed so that they are high enough so that seeing across the tables aren't a problem.
High centerpieces make for an impressive entrance and everytime you get up and dance you see how wonderful they are. And between sitting and standing, I'm hoping my guests spend most of the night standing and dancing.

I have got low ones in a bowl. 2 dozen roses cluttered, with candles going around!

Re: The Great Debate: High vs, Low centerpieces?
we had a mixture...we combine both elements of high and low
not the best picture but it will do
we had decorative and mini callas in a ring with candles...then the tall part was the callas
I originally wanted low CPs and then when I saw the ballroom completed (just finished construction) I knew low CP's would not work. The room would look VERY empty. The room has a rather generic look to it. Not earthy or homey or decorated in someone else's style - this was what I wanted as I prefer to decorate the way I want - not to have it predetermined for me. Most temples have many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs in addition to weddings that use their catering facilities with kid-friendly themes so they HAVE to keep them pretty generic. Having just been to a function at this temple just three weeks ago, it confirmed that the need for tall CPs was there. They had the florist (the one I am using actually) install tulle with white lights to bring the ceiling down a little bit and STILL the tables needed height.
Keep in mind, that not all tall centerpieces obstruct vision. There are many different kinds.

Re: The Great Debate: High vs, Low centerpieces?
my personal preference are low CP's with candles.
but it definitely depends on the room. if the room is enormous and has very high ceilings, I would say go for the high ones.
