The Great Debate - Vacation Time

The Great Debate - Vacation Time

My Co-worker just asked our boss for her honeymoon time. She let him know that she will be out the 2 weeks following her wedding. She has two weeks off and 5 sick days to use.
He let her know that her vacation time only consists of Monday through Friday for a grand total of only 10 days.

Since when is two weeks vacation only 10 days? two weeks if 14 days. period. what if you worked in an industry where you didn't work Mon - Fri? this wouldn't even be able to apply.

I'm upset for her. Anyone else had some similar happen to them?

So next year when i tell him I am going to be gone for 3½ weeks he'll flip. oh well. this is a once in a life time vacation. if he doesn't want to pay us he doesn't have to. still going

yes, she would get paid for 10 days. however since she has already used 6 vacation days this year, she really has less time. but essentially she will be paid for 10 days.

everyone i kow has PTO (paid time off) and has a total count of days, 14, 21 whatever. you deduct from that.
My FH has a union job and his is the same way, he has 2 weeks vacation and it equals to 14 days.

when i used to work in retail years ago, i also had two weeks off which was 14 days. i couldn't have the sterotypical Mon-Fri off since my the days i didn work were all across the board.

that's exactly how ours is but the weekends don't count as days because we don't work on the weekends (well most of us don't).

i have three weeks vacation as of this year. last year, while i still had the two week vacation package, i took a grand total of 13 days vacation (all spread out besides one consecutive 5 day vacation) and he never said anything to me and i got paid for all of my time off.

if that's the case, why change it now. i'm trying to look online to see if there is anything listed there but it looks like your not required by NYS law to offer vacation time and each vacation time is up to the individual employer so there is no standard.

My job would go by hours, not days. Since I work a 40 hour work week...I get 40 hours off, no matter what the configuration of days is.

At my job 2 weeks = 70 hours, or 10 business days.. That's pretty standard

14 days is considered almost 3 'weeks' vacation time here!

I would warn him now or see if you can carry over anything you have left from this year.. At my job you can't but maybe if its a smaller firm they'll be flexible

no, i'm not allowed to carry over any vacation time from one year to the next.
if the Mon-Fri standard was correct then he let me take off 3 weeks last year since i took off 13 days in vacation time.
either way, i'll be gone from work for about 4 weeks so i guess i won't be getting paid and will have to live off of peanut butter and jelly when we come back from our HM - it will help us lose all the weight from overeating on vacation!
we'll see what happens. i don't plan on saying anything to him about my vacation time until eveything is finalized in December. So in January after the holidays i will let him know.

wait..how many days do you work a week?

I work 5 so 2 weeks vacation would be 10 work days.

I'm confused.

i get 3 weeks or 15 days

I don't work weekends so they don't pay that

one week is 5 working days - at least that what it means in the car business

As long as you get the time you need i guess it doesnt matter- i guess just dont expect to be paid

you'll be so happy on your honey moon ya wont care :)

I agree with him 2 weeks vacation is 10 days vacation you only work 10 days out of the 2 weeks not 14.. If you worked in an industry where you are open Monday-Sunday unless you're regular scheduled hours are monday-sunday then you only get 10days vacation

For every 80 hours worked (2 weeks), I accumulate 4 hours PTO. I like this system since it rewards people who put in a lot of overtime and you can, in theory, always build PTO instead of being limited to 2 sick days, 2 weeks vacation etc. It also carries over every year.

If you have remaining PTO when you leave the company, you get a check for the amount remaining. When my coworker quit, she got a nice $3000 check

I could see that being a bummer if you thought you got 14 days.

but when i think two weeks, i think 10 days.

we all need to save up that vacation time!

my boss will never give you a definitive answer. he will always skirt around the issue.
for years, i assumed it was 14 days since i had 2 weeks off for the last 6 years. last year i asked for an extra week off a year since i had been here for so long. so now i have 3 weeks off.
last year, i used 14 days off as vacation time. i got paid for ever single day and he never gave me a problem and approved all my time off.

this is not even for me right now although i am wondering for my HM next year. as long as i get the time i don't care, and you have to give it to me kinda because its already booked. if you only want to pay me for the 3 weeks i'll take the 4th without pay.

but i don't undersdtand how you go back and forth one year it 14 days and one year it Mon-Fri

i don't know why he paid you, but I take it as a gift. no other company would pay you for a weekend when you dont work it. I think he's just a flake!
