The house you bought/are buying...will this be your starter house or your permanent house?
Wondering what everyone's plan is.
Is it wise to find THE house now...or to buy something you can live in and trade it in after a few years...after your money has grown.
Some people say this is a wiser move. Others say it is harder b/c when you buy your 2nd house..you are also selling your first...so it is tougher :(
What do you think?

We totally bought a starter. Everything in our price range was el crappo! We bought small and nice and only plan on staying there for a max of 5 years. Kind of a stepping stone..

We will move within 5 years, but the house is big enough that we could live here forever. Its three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It has a FDR, EIK, LV, and den. But I definitely eventually want a bigger, dream house.

We are looking to be in this house for the long haul. It's a good size and has everything we will need. Down the line, we can add on if we need to.
I have a friend who got a co-op as her 'starter' home and she wishes that they'd just rented a little longer so they could go right into a house. She bought 5 years ago, when real estate was still high, but not as high as it is now.
IMO, I don't see the point of starter homes here, when they cost $400,000. But that's just me.

we bought a co op instead of renting and hope that we'll make something off of it so that we'll have a nice downpayment after we're married..i think we might have to move to guam in order to afford a house though

we have been looking for a few months now and may elect to wait a bit more. i don't see the point in buying a 500K **** shack that we would outgrow in 3 years. for 100K more one actually gets some space in what i would envision a real starter home to be...
we are still undecided, it's so damn frustrating!

we could stay here forever but I don't know if we necessarily will.

We didn't buy what most would consider a starter house, but we did buy something that we thought would have great resale value should we decide to move at some point.
Although our house is far from my 'dream home', our location is great and our property size (1 acre) could easily accommodate an addition, both up and out.
Only time will tell.

Our house is definitely not a starter, we were very lucky. The last owners were here for 32 years, and raised 5 kids here. I would like to think that we would do something similar.

We're somewhat undecided. If we stay in NY then this will probably be our permanent house. We love the area we're going to be in and I don't think we could afford to upgrade in this area.

It could be permanent if we want it to be. In other words, it's not too small or in a bad area where we HAVE to move. However I don't know if I want to stay in the same house the rest of my life so sure, we may decide to upgrade in the future.

I have to say I think mine would be permanent. I can't be bothered to put up my house and look for another house..

Ours is definitely a starter home. It's a co-op. We are casually looking for a house now, but we've only been here a year, so I stress the word casually.

we are starting to house hunt now... i think the house we choose will be a starter home that has the possibility to become a permanent home down the line... with some additional work done to it...

Re: The house you bought/are buying...will this be your starter house or your permanent house?
Similar to Jenny5150s post, we also bought a home that some may not consider a starter home, and we have thought about the possibility of moving to a much larger home...but, we absolutely love the size of our property (1 acre) and the fact that we are waterfront, with no neighbors close to us (their homes and properties are further away from the LI Sound, ours kind of juts out).
So...we went through the process of hiring an architect, working with him for many many months, got a varience approval...now, we have to either built our dream home, or find another home with the exact same waterfront location....moving probably won't happen, but it's not completely out of the question.
If something comes along that is perfect, there may be a for sale sign in front of my home.
