The house you bought/are buying...will this be your starter house or your permanent house?
Original post by Gonnacatchapeacock
Wondering what everyone's plan is.
Is it wise to find THE house now...or to buy something you can live in and trade it in after a few years...after your money has grown.
Some people say this is a wiser move. Others say it is harder b/c when you buy your 2nd house..you are also selling your first...so it is tougher :(
What do you think?

We didn't buy what most would consider a starter house, but we did buy something that we thought would have great resale value should we decide to move at some point.
Only time will tell.
same here

Well, DH has lived in this house for 37 years ... could be 37 more
Same here it is the only house DH has lived in. We are in the process of buying his siblings out.

This is actually a touchy subject in our house. This is one area we don't necessarily agree on and see eye to eye.
As far as I am concerned this is a starter house and we only plan on being here for another 5 years. However, my hubby doesn't see any point in moving and would rather expand. Living through a major renevation is not fun. He has never done it, I have. We will have to see when the time comes where we are in careers, family, etc. It doesn't mean I don't love this house (as my husband thinks), it is just that I can't see us spending the rest of our lives here.

we did not buy a starter home, we will live there forever. We spent more than we wanted, of course, but we just work harder so that we never have to more to bigger or better.
We did not want to end up in a starter and build up.

Unsure- we love our house immensely and it is in a great area with great schools- if we have more than two children we may want something a little bigger but if we have two children we'll stay put!

it's so hard to think of anything $400,000+ as a starter home. We bought a nice size house on a quite road, in St. James and I honestly could be there forever!!!

We plan to stay for the long haul. We bought a 4 bedroom cape that has room for expansion upstairs and into the backyard so we should be fine. At our age (30 something) we are past the age of starter house.

Our house is a starter - but we really lucked out buying our house when we did. We got our completely renovated ranch in Nassau Co. for around 270K. 3 years later that price has almost doubled! We moved in hoping this might happen - so this is def. a starter for us. We'll start looking for our second and final home in the next year or two. Once we start a family I am NOT moving again! Plus, I want our kids to have a childhood home growing up. We moved three times when I was a kid - so I want my own children to have one place to grow up in.

We are definately looking for a decent starter. So far everything we like is too much $$ (Nassau sux!!) and the starters are even too much $$ for what you get! We're trying to find something in an area we like that has the potential to be expanded and upgraded so that we can live there forever if we want or be able to sell for much more than we bought it for.

We are in the process of buying a home. I like to think this will be a place we will be for at least 10 years, maybe more. The area is great, the schools are wonderful, and the house feels like a home already. The former owners raised 4 kids in the house, reminds me alot of the house I grew up in.
However, if I make enough money some day and can move to a nice mansion in sands point, i'm sooo there!!
