Do you think your In-Laws or Future-in-Laws know the real you? Do they really know your likes, dislikes, hobbies, sensibilities etc?
This is not whether your in-laws like you, it's do they know you?

Re: The Real Me?
Definitely not. I grew up in a family that played a lot of games and really thrived on together time and intellect.
DH's family was never around, had no interest in pop culture and never even heard of YATZEE until a cruise last year.
They know very surface things about me, but they simply don't 'get' me so I kind of conform to them when I'm around them.

Re: The Real Me?
I'm pretty sure my FIL knows the real me...when DH and I were dating we got into a 'disagreement' and his dad was in the other room. Well, to make a long story short, I think his dad kinda figured out I was 'the one' when he saw I wasn't going to take any cr@p from anyone!!
Unfortunately though, my DH's mom passed away of cancer before we could meet...

Never have, never will. I don't think they even try.

Re: The Real Me?
I don't think so because A) they are too self absorbed and B) I dont like them...so I'm just polite and nice all the time. FIL is OK but MIL is a raving loony and a liar and I cant stand her (God forgive me).

Re: The Real Me?
no. If my MIL knew the real me she would know why DH fought so hard on my behalf to not have all of her co -workers at my shower. Stangers. eww.
she tries though, but sometimes, I feel that she wants me to sort of give my profile like a Playmate or something. . .'I like long walks in dark alleys, flat soda & sleeping late.'
Or that she wants me to just like the things she likes. Like needlepoint & all thing Disney.
FIL is too hard to read, but I think he is more perceptive than he lets on.

Re: The Real Me?
I don't think my MIL knows the real me, because she is too busy telling me who I should be, how I should dress. She has ignored the real me and tried to make me into the woman she wishes she had the opportunity to be. I think my FIL knows me. Not deeply, but I think he is more willing to accept me for me even if he doesn't understand who that is.

yes I think they do know the real me. I act the same around them as I do my own family and I tend to wear my thoughts/emotions right on my sleeve.

Re: The Real Me?
I put 'not sure' but maybe 'no' would have been a better answer. But I am torn- I am a lot more reserved around my in-laws- I definitely watch my tongue as I sometimes say irreverant things, and I don't know how they would take it. They's both very strait-laced, but lovely people.
I know I act in ways around DH's sister and brother in law (who are more like friends, since we're so close in age and similar in terms of sense of humor). There are things I have said in front of SIL that I would NEVER say in front of MIL and FIL.

Re: The Real Me?
First let me say that my in-laws are truly wonderful people - i am blessed and fortunate in this regard. But do they know the 'real me' .. absolutely not!
Quite honestly, there are only a small handful of people in my life who truly 'know me' .. my DH being one of them.. so I couldn't expect them to really know me , anyhow -- especially since I don't allow myself to reveal all sides of me to most

Re: The Real Me?
yes, because I've grown up around them. They've known me since I was 17, and because we were so young, a lot of our 'dates' were at each other's homes and family parties. His mom calls me on a regular basis too, so yeah, she knows me very well.
eta: I'm more 'me' with my FILs than I am with my own family --- it's a little sad.

Re: The Real Me?
Definitely not, not that I try to be something else but they haven't seen when I get really mad, or when I cry. I thing the most vulnerable side of me that they have seen of me is when they came to meet Alia after I just had given birth to her.

Re: The Real Me?
Absolutely! My In-laws are incredible people. I'm completely myself around them. My MIL considers me one of her own!! She always tells people my FOUR children now instead of three. They know my likes and dislikes, we can joke, poke fun, play jokes at one another... we have such an awesome relationship.
Now my parents on the other hand I don't even think they really know me let alone DH.

I don't think they do. We really don't spend enough time together since they live out of state. I don't think they would like me so much if they did

It's kind of in the middle. The do know me quite a bit, but they could definately make the effort to know me a little better.

Re: The Real Me?
My FMIL only knows surface things, as another bride put it. Mostly the things that my coworkers and acquaintances know- hobbies, basic likes and dislikes. I used to mind that she didn't make an effort to get to know me, but having observed HER for almost 7 years, I prefer things this way.

This is me exactly! Sometimes it bothers me to have to do this, but it's just the simplest way to get by.
