The right time to get a dress

The right time to get a dress

I guess since I am getting married in Nov 09, I feel like I have time. I already choose the gown that I want, but I am unsure of when I should get it. A lot of the bridal stores say that I should order 10 months before the date, just in case of screw ups or whatever? The dress I want is not complicated, a simple type dress, but I guess my other question would be when do I have the bridesmaid obtain theirs???

Re: The right time to get a dress

My wedding is Aug 09 and I am hoping to order by gown by next month. I want to give myself enough time just in case something goes wrong which I sincerely hope not.

For the BM's I would say end of the summer should be ok.

Your bridesmaids don't need to order until six months before the wedding. That is plenty of time! Wow, you are super- organized!

Most girls order their dress early, but sometimes the store doesn't even put in the order until later (depending on how long it takes for your dress to come in). If you have an idea of what dress you want, ask at the store how long it takes to order it. I bought my new dress in Feb for my May wedding!

In case you're interested, I'm posting my original dress....it has never been worn, still at the store. FM me for more details if you'd like.

Good luck and have fun dress shopping!

Even though your gown is might be simple you should still order it about 9-10 months before the date and the BM dresses should be 6-7 months before.

I have asked the same question before and the bridal store is really not going to put the order earlier. Six months should be enough. I called same bridal store and they told me that the deliverance time is 4 months. You might want to check out with another bridal store.

The reason your bridal store told you is because they are afraid you will find the dress somewhere else for a better price and loose your business.

I got married in March 08 and I ordered my dress in May 07 - which was 10 months before I got married and they said had I waited one more week I would have had to rush order it... it also depends on the designer and where your ordering your gown from.

10 months is about standard. If you have already fallen in love with a dress, check with the bridal shop to make sure there is no danger of it being discontinued. Sometimes dress makers discontinue some styles to make room for their new lines. If that is the case, then I would order it sooner.

I ordered my dress in October of 07, which was 10 months and they were telling me I needed to order right away ( I was waiting until I found shoes, since thye ordered it to size) and it came in last week, even though they said not until June.

But, if you are sure about your dress, I'd say order it now. I went back in January to order my BM dresses and my bridal gown had been discontinued!

They will ALWAYS tell you it takes 10-12 months. Its BS. VERY few dress makers that that long. Provonias is one of the few that actually takes a while b/c they are made in France (or Spain, I forget).

Bridal shops will PUSH PUSH PUSH for the sale. They do not want you to walk out the door. Ever notice they ask you off the bat when your wedding is. Have you ever seen them turn a bride away whose wedding is soon? Me neither.....

They make you panic that you'll never get a dress in time. This happened to me & I got bullied into ordering a dress I didn't like. When it came, (10 weeks later by the way) I hated it & I wound up having to get a whole new gown. Don't stress and don't be pressured. 3-4 months is plenty of time.

ETA - my wedding was June 2nd & my BM dresses were ordered in April. They came in time.
