I hope I don’t trouble or offend anyone by posting this but I was just wondering what you ladies think of the situation in Iraq with the prisoners. I find it a little hard to feel sympathy for those prisoners, yes they are being abused and humiliated but then again aren’t these prisoners the same people that hate Americans??? Are these people in the prisons that are being abused innocent civilians??? Because I find it hard for me to feel bad for them when they have done so many horrible acts to us. I don’t agree with what our military did because it makes us look really bad. We were supposed to be there to free a country who was under a horrible regime under Saddam Hussein, so we look like the biggest morons in the world right now. I know some of these military people will be punished and they deserve it ,but who is going to punish the guys who dragged our dead soldiers in the middle of the streets dead? who is going to punish the guys who hung dead soldiers off a bridge? Who is going to punish the guys responsible for Jessica Lynch’s rape? who is going to punish the guys who beheaded Nicholas Berg? will the guys who plotted 911 be punished? Are any guys in custody for any of these crimes except 911? Their acts are much more horrible than ours yet we are getting punished for our crimes while those sick bastards go on killing more innocent civilians.

Bedda26 -- you are the queen of controversy today... rooting for the Mets and now this.. what's going on girl?
I have no compassion for these prisoners. I think what we did was stupid, sure. But I would be most p'o ed at whoever took the photos. I never would have let them get out.
Think about it this way.. Anyone would rather be an enemy combatant in an American prison than an American in an enemy prison.

I don't really know what to think because I don't know if we are getting the whole entire situation presented to us by the media. However I don't think it's right to torture the 'average' prisoner because they are not the ones that know the information the military wants. It's a shame that they did this to the prisoners because when it happens to an American, we're all up in arms over it.
I'm shocked that the man that was kidnapped and escaped 2 weeks ago was treated somewhat well during his captivity. They didn't put him up at the Iraqi Four Seasons, but they did perform surgery on his arm which when I read that I thought that that was humane of them to do.

I don't mean to offend anyone but it's just that it's upsetting me.
What our military is doing is totally wrong. We are supposed to be setting a good example but all we're doing are making fools of ourselves.

Re: The situation in Iraq with the prisoners...
I feel that if we expect certain conditions to be upheld for our POW's then we should adhere to that same standard. I am also not sure as to what these prisoners have done. The US is capturing and interrogating thousands of people each day. Are we sure that these prisoners are actually guilty of anything? Several hundred were released a few days ago. Yes, probably a show of goodwill, but I seriously doubt that they would let known terrorists and murderers go.
I also hate to play devils advocate, but do you think that we have not killed innocent people in Iraq? I am not justifying hanging people from bridges and decapitate people, but still innocent lives are being taken by both parties.

I also find it hard to feel sympathy for them. I don't know why but I am feeling so much anger towards that region right now. I nearly cryed when I saw what they did to nick Berg. I am so glad FH is back home!!! I really don't know what I would be feeling right now if he were still over there! I know this country has done some awful things not only to Iraq, but to other nations as well, but come on!!!! they don't chop someone's head off and then display it on video. They are offended because our soldiers had some of them walking nude? but I guess torture for them isn't appalling huh? Over the weekend I saw this small comic thing in the newspaper and it showed that guy who killed Berg (forgot his name) on top of a grave in a huge cemetry with the graves marked 'Saddams Victim' and saying about how outraged they were at the torture and humilation that the Americans had brought about to the Muslim world. Then you see one of the graves saying 'oh Now they're outraged?????' hope that explanation made sense, I guess you have to see it!!!! It basically just states how condracting this people are!!!!!

I agree with you 100%...It's ok for them to terrorize the world but they get tortured and they find it appalling!!! I find that whole region appalling. I too have anger at them right now.

I think that the contradiction cuts both ways. Here we are saying that we are there to support democracy and rebuild when in the meantime a few of our troops are busy humiliating POW's. Is it the same as what happened to Nick Berg? Of course not, but just as the act of torture and humiliation was conducted by a few Americans the murder of Berg was conducted by a few AL Queda members. Not even Iraqi soldiers.
And IMO it is sad that there is so little understanding that people now are clumping that whole region into one group. It would be like saying that every white person in the south is a member of a racist organization. It is grouping everyone in as Anti-American and terrorists. IMO that is inaccurate and a rash judgement.

yup, this i believe is a huge problem. it has been reported that many of the 'prisoners' were random people picked up off the street. there is no excuse for the horrible treatment of those people. the self-righteous US should have 'known better'. it's not an even playing field, and although i do not condone the savage behavior of some iraqi terrorists, i do feel sympathy for such an oppressed population.
also, one has to really dig to find an estimated iraqi death toll as the US government does not even attempt to keep track. i find that appalling.

Honestly speaking, I have no sympathy for these prisoners. There is a reason they are prisoners...
That being said, I don;t doubt that our men and women are being abused and humiliated, there is just no pictures of it happening..
Thats where we went wrong...the EVIDENCE

as much as i think the release of the pictures is horrible, what i think is more scary is if they weren't released the attitude that the US 'does no wrong' would continue. the mass media and government are very selective in what they present, one needs to start digging and put two and two together to even begin to get the 'real picture'. i can't stand this. i feel like my government is lying to me and don't know where to get 'true facts' and credible information... that's a sad state of affairs for a 'democracy'

Re: The situation in Iraq with the prisoners...
I agree with Heidla and Holly. Toturing prisoners of war is ILLEGAL under all of the international conventions that the US has signed off on. We made a promise to the world that we would never do that. It is embarassing to our country and a testament to how screwed up the Bush administration is that we have dehumanized all Iragis to the extent that we no longer care whether or not they are treated as humans.
Those pictures were not taken for fun, they were taken to show other prisoners and threaten them with the same treatment. A lot of those prisoners were picked up in random sweeps of certain areas in Iraq and then were left in there for months because the prison was understaffed.

I agree. Are we all naive enough to believe that these people were treated to a trial to prove that they are guilty of wrongdoing before they were thrown in jail? Regardless, do we torture Americans in our prisons even if they were found guilty of murder? We (America) have signed treaties saying that we will treat POWs humanely. Not only have we gone against that, but we have found the way in which we will most humiliate the men in that culture. It disgusts me that this went on....And though someone mentioned that the pictures were not taken for fun, the smiling and laughing American faces in the pictures is what disturbs me the most.

I cannot feel sorry for a country whose people were dancing in the streets and celebrating when 911 happened. Doesn't anyone find that disturbing?
I guess two wrongs don't make a right so let's have the terrorists continue what they do while we get punished for mistreating their precious prisoners. This bothers me most.

I agree with your entire argument. They weren’t just in their own countries celebrating they were here too. As I limped in pain and while I was completely in a daze from losing my office and figuring out what to do, I went with a co-worker to buy milk.. Don’t even know why she needed milk, but I was staying with her that night and though I should at least pay for their needs. The men in this place were celebrating, cheering, raising their fits and smiling broadly. The LOVED what happened that day. They have the American Justice system to back them up and the freedoms of our country to allow them the right to take glory in an event that nearly killed me. That hurt.
I find very little room in my heart for pity about these prisoners. Even less so now that they are free. Just like I find very little pity for the rape and torture of Child Molesters in our own American prisons. Not to say I’m heartless, but I prefer to think of it as Karma. What goes around comes around. That goes for the soldiers as well as the prisoners.

Re: The situation in Iraq with the prisoners...
These people take pleasure in our pain and I cannot feel sorry for those prisoners.
If I lost a close friend or family member on 911, someone that meant the world to me, I could not sit here and say 'oh those poor prisoners'. They have inflicted so much more torture on americans and other nations and we have to sit here and cry for those prisoners being abused????????? oh no no no.....they've made us shed enough tears...let them cry for a while.
