The situation in Iraq with the prisoners...

Original post by bedda26

Hey Ladies,

I hope I don’t trouble or offend anyone by posting this but I was just wondering what you ladies think of the situation in Iraq with the prisoners. I find it a little hard to feel sympathy for those prisoners, yes they are being abused and humiliated but then again aren’t these prisoners the same people that hate Americans??? Are these people in the prisons that are being abused innocent civilians??? Because I find it hard for me to feel bad for them when they have done so many horrible acts to us. I don’t agree with what our military did because it makes us look really bad. We were supposed to be there to free a country who was under a horrible regime under Saddam Hussein, so we look like the biggest morons in the world right now. I know some of these military people will be punished and they deserve it ,but who is going to punish the guys who dragged our dead soldiers in the middle of the streets dead? who is going to punish the guys who hung dead soldiers off a bridge? Who is going to punish the guys responsible for Jessica Lynch’s rape? who is going to punish the guys who beheaded Nicholas Berg? will the guys who plotted 911 be punished? Are any guys in custody for any of these crimes except 911? Their acts are much more horrible than ours yet we are getting punished for our crimes while those sick bastards go on killing more innocent civilians.

These people take pleasure in our pain and I cannot feel sorry for those prisoners.

If I lost a close friend or family member on 911, someone that meant the world to me, I could not sit here and say 'oh those poor prisoners'. They have inflicted so much more torture on Americans and other nations and we have to sit here and cry for those prisoners being abused????????? oh no no no.....they've made us shed enough tears...let them cry for a while.

I did lose someone on 911. I am angry about 911, but I also saw the pictures of people around the world sobbing and holding memorials for us. Yes, even in the middle east. IMO you are allowing the fact that some people were happy blind you to the fact that not every middle-eastern was dancing in the streets. In times of trial and grief people want to assign blame. It is an understandable desire, but I think that simply assigning that blame to every one in a region is wrong.

I will also state again that I do not know why any of the prisoners are being held in that prison . The US is doing sweeps and interrogating anyone who seems suspicious, not guilty. Who knows what those people in that prison did or didn't do. I do know one thing. The US soldiers did violate a law by torturing those men. Agree with it or not , it was a violation of the Geneva Convention. I guess you don't have to feel sorry for the prisoners, but at least realize that what happened was illegal according to our own laws.

What our military is doing is totally wrong. We are supposed to be setting a good example but all we're doing are making fools of ourselves.

Some of us lie awake at night hoping and wishing that our loved ones come home safely, I am one of those people and I am tired of having to set the good example. What the media did is exploit something that has been done in war for years and years. IT is a tactic used by all to scare prisoners into submission and to gain information from them. They should not have released those pictures. Yes it was not nice to humiliate the prisoners but they all still have their heads attached to their bodies. I blame the media for what happened to Mr. Berg and for the consequeces our men and women will have to suffer if caught. We humiliated them but we let them live.

I'm sorry but my opinion is get our men and women home and make a golf course out of Iraq.

I agree

I have too many family members in the military (id have to show all four branches!) and I survived 9/11 myself. I really don't care what they did to them as long as they got information that saved lives. These prisoners weren't treated any differently that lots of POWs, including our own. We set examples? No we show them we follow the rules, but still can't force them to do the same.

So we have bragging rights to being the more civilized country. Whoohoo.. that doesnt prevent them from torturing or beheading. What did we gain?

I also blame the media (as per a previous post) for Mr. Berg.

I honestly believe that what happened to Nick Berg would have happened regardless of the photos. He was not murdered by an Iraqi. He was murdered by one of Bin Laden's right hand men who is from Jordan. It was not an act of retaliation. It was an act of evil by a group of men that don't really give a damn about Iraq or its people. The care about one thing and one thing only, starting a holy war. Making it seem as if Mr. Berg was murdered in retaliation for what the US soldiers did is IMO a tactic to make the US get deeper into a war that we should never have started. Unfortunately, it seems as if it is working.

Well IMO this war has its purpose two buildings and thousands of lives lost is enough reason for me. And until my United States Marine FH comes home to me safe and sound and every other uniform wearing American returns home, they will have my whole hearted undivided support. They deserve at least that for fighting for our freedoms.

You should read **** Clark's book. According to him and several other DC insiders, there was no evidence of a link between Iraq and 9/11. All investigations led to the conclusion that Al Queda did not have a state sponsor. But the administration chose to begin a war plan for Iraq before we even went into Afghanistan, where we knew bin Laden was.

I, too, remember seeing footage from people cheering in the street - but that was shot in Pakistan. I don't remember any footage from Iraq. My concern is that we have too easily lumped all Iraqis into the category of 'terrorist' and that soon we will be calling all muslims 'terrorists.'

Iraq is not a state full of Islamic militants. There is no terrorist state. Instead they are spread out all over the world like a freakin' disease and it is spreading while we 'bring democary' to a country that doesn't want us there.

First let me say that just because I oppose this war does not mean that I do not support the men and women who are over there. I do!!! I would much rather your FH and all of our troops be sitting at home with their families. I hope that they all return home safely and soon!!!

Secondly, I do not believe that the war in Iraq has anything to do with 911. If I remember correctly we went there because of WMD's, but since we did not find any the President had to make it about something so why not just pick the worst day in recent history. Our President is exploiting the pain that 911 caused us. He is using it to justify his own agenda while we are losing hundreds of our men and women. It saddens and sickens me.

Re: The situation in Iraq with the prisoners...

As I stated in the other post I am not going to argue with anyone here, we are all entitled to our opinions thanks to my FH and the other brave men and women willing to stand up for this country.

Those of us who have the ones we loved there are tied so close emotionally to this situation that we sometimes let it overtake us. But then again how could we not we are the ones that have everything at stake. God forbid something were to happen to him, MY world would be the one destroyed, others would simply read the news peice maybe feel bad for a moment and forget him and his sacrifice in the next.

I agree completely and it's good to see that other people actually see this. I don't have much faith in the intelligence of the average American and I think that people getting all up in arms about the prisoner debaucle based on the beheading of Berg helps that argument plenty. However, I don't think that our gov't believes this and I think that if we do get 'deeper into war' it is for reasons other than that beheading. Those men don't need an excuse to commit horrible acts like that - that's what they do on a regular basis regardless!

As far as the photos go, the thing I'm mainly disturbed about is the taking of photos. No offense you guys, but you're pretty naive if you think that this is not the standard in prisons everywhere, especially during a time of war. This happens to all nationalities when they are held captive and often, when it's not a 1st world country that's the captor, a lot worse happens - rape rooms, starvation, all forms of torture. It's a fact of war, right or wrong.

I.agree.that.there.was.no.reason.this.torture.should.have.gone.on.It.does.NOT.make.us.look.good.

Also.I.think.people.need.to.realize.that.being.opposed.to.the.war.does.not.mean.they're.opposed.to.the.troops.

Bush.was.the.one.who.sent.our.troops.there.and.so.many.of.them.are.losing.their.lives.If.people.are.opposed.to.the.war.they.like.me.blame.Bush.not.the.people.who.are.doing.their.job.
