Themes
Does everyone here have a theme for their wedding? I don't really have one, do most people have themes? What is it that you really do to create a theme?

Do you have your dress yet? Maybe the style of your dress and where you`re having your reception will lead you to a theme. We do not have a theme, per se. However, we decided immediately that we wanted to have a more casual, fun wedding, so we are having it catered in our yard. I guess we`ll end up with some kind of a garden theme...I`ve seen some invitations that would lend themselves well, and favors and centerpieces could tie in, though I don`t have any ideas yet. Good Luck!
I am having an Autumn themed Nov. wedding. Basically, a theme just helps you to tie all of your wedding plans together. I have seen a Beach theme at a friend's wedding, which was great. Some people want a Cinderella theme, Precious Moments theme, Stars and Moon theme, Victorian-Era theme, Doves, Butterflies. The theme should have meaning to you in some way.
For mine- I am having my centerpieces have berries, leaves, pine cones with flowers and candles. I am giving out glass leaf jars of Vermont Maple Syrup. My invites have subtle leaves on them.
My cake will have a fondant bow, with leaves inprinted on it.
Your theme should reflect your reception site, time of year, style of dress etc... But you don't need one. Some girls love to mix-n-match all of their favorite things to create the look of their wedding.
Michele described what having a theme means pretty well. And let me tell you, these places that sell wedding-related stuff really know how to work the 'theme'. If you look anywhere, one particular theme could run the gamut..from invitations, to bubbles for the ceremony, to placecard holders...all the way to the favors you will give guests.
It seems that having a theme would help us nervous brides make decisions easier...though in my case, I couldn`t decide on a theme!! I am trying to narrow it down...some kind of nautical theme, tying in the color blue with my bridesmaid dresses, and possibly giving out some kind of nautical-themed favor. Though I haven`t found one I like!!
(If you follow any of my messages, I am very indecisive!!)hahaha
Anyway, have fun deciding...let us know if you choose a theme or not!!! :)
Hi Buttafli,
I'm doing a subtle patriotic theme because my wedding is on Labor Day. My ladies will be dressed in navy blue dresses with silver shoes. Their flowers will consist of white roses with small red and blue flowers mixed in. The centerpieces will match but I am having a glass bowl in the middle with silver stars floating in it. I have also been lucky enough to find wedding invitations with small silver stars on them. I have heard negative comments about it because it's not a 'typical' wedding theme but ever since Sept. 11, these people seem to have changed their minds. I didn't want a monotonous wedding so I thought of something taht I felt was cute and out of the ordinary. You should do a theme that means something to you. Good luck
As Michele said, the theme should have some meaning to you. For me and my fiance, there are a few family members and close friends who are no longer with us. We wanted a way to incorporate them into the wedding without bringing the mood down, so we chose cherubs because to us, these people are 'our special angels' so far, for centerpieces, we are using small cherub birdbaths as pedestals, a cherub is holding up the bowl where a floral arrangement of roses, of course :)can be placed and our invitations, they will be a floral cards with lilac vellum overlay tied together with a chiffon ribbon and little gold cherub charms which will be tied the center of the bow. These are just a couple ways of how I'm working with my theme. There are lots of ideas out there, keep us posted on what you decide. Good Luck.
Our wedding theme is gearing towards something like Kim Anderson's little boy and girl couples. We like that stuff, since we've been together for almost 9 years, since we were 15, so the little kid couples sort of symbolize that we've been together for a long time, and grew up together. Maybe not a little kids, but all through teen life and then some. So, for us is does have special meaning.
Hi-
I`m having a winter theme for my December wedding. Winter was never my favorite season - but we are an interfaith couple, having a nondenominational ceremony, so I didn`t want it geared towards Christmas or Hanukkah. I`ve actually had a good time with it, and I`m glad I`m doing it! Our invites will have snowflakes on them, my place cards will be put in silver/snow covered pinecones surrounding a snowman with fake snow around his base. I want either edible or plastic glittery snowflakes on my cake, and i will put fake snow around the bottom of it as well (on the table around it). I`m also thinking about giving mugs with hot cocoa and hersheys kisses as favors. I could go on and on, but you get the idea! Whatever you do, just have a lot of fun with it! Good luck!
I love the idea of mugs with hot cocoa and kisses for favors!! That is sooo cute!!!
Thanks so much! I have to admit, I got the idea from someone on this board a while back (shocker, right??!!)...now it's just a matter of finding mugs that don't look too cheesy, but are within my budget...what are you doing?
I'm not sure...you can see how indecisive I am!! I make a decision, and then change my mind 5 seconds later! it's awful.. :)
I am thinking of these little glass bottles filled with some sand from the beach, and a few small seashells...I saw them on this website somewhere..I have it bookmarked. I can tie a ribbon with our names on it...I think it would be nice. You just hate to order all these things and then have the guests throw them out when they get home ya know?? I thought this could make a nice decoration in their homes...
But ya know...candles always seem to be a hit too!!!!! hhahahahaha
Bnjoyful- A very close friend of mine had a seashell/beach themed wedding. (Claud2001). She had her cake done in ocean blue with seashells on it (it looked amazing!), had small seashells in hers and the bridal party bouquet, gave out suncatchers as favors (I love mine, it is on my bedroom window), and her centerpieces were large huricane lamps full of sands and shells surrounding by beach greens/flowers.
Marnles- Martha Stewart.com has a snowflake cookie cutter, and has the cookies placed in a beautiful favor holder (round circle). You might want to check it out. I love the idea of snowflakes as a theme. If you have a flower girl, you could consider her holding a muff that is draped with flowers. I also saw the prettiest FG dress that had white fur around the collar and sleeves.
well, I thought I covered all the bases..but I missed the cake angle on my theme!! How very clever...
I haven't even gone to do my menu yet (still have a while to do that) but when I do, I am going to see about them doing something similar! As far as the suncatchers...I did think of that, but the ones I've researched are out of my price range. These little beach sand bottles come out to around $2.50/each. Nothing too extravagant, but just enough I think. Well, it has to be...I just don't have the money!!! Thank you for the suggestions, that was so nice of you!! :) JOY
My FH and I looked at favors, and he didn't want to give 'dust collectors' as he calls them. We want to give something people will actually use and enjoy. I thought the frame idea was good, but then someone posted that they went to a wedding and many of the frames were left on the tables. A friend said her friend is using interlocking salt and pepper shakers...but I figure everyone has them already.
Going with the theme of romance and roses, I am stumped. I have to admit I am hard pressed to remember any favor I have ever gotten at even the nicest wedding, with the exception of a cut glass ashtray. I am beginning to think I am obssessing on a minor issue!
I keep coming back to the frames. I guess if people leave them behind I can put my MOH in charge of collecting them at the end of the reception, and I will use them throughout the house with pictures. Guess what people will be getting as Christmas gifts next year too?
Bnjoyful- I will get the site that she got her suncatchers on. I don't think she spent too much $$ on them and they are so nice.
DianeL- If you like Frames, give them. Maybe you could put a cute poem with them telling people to bring them home. Sometimes I think guests think that the frames belong to the Hall.
I love the flower girl idea, but unfortunately I don't have one. :( But I will check out the Martha Stewart idea of the cookie cutters - sounds adorable!!! Thanks, as always, for your help!!
My husband felt the same way about 'dust collectors' as favors, and that's why we went with wine. For the record, not ONE bottle was left behind. In fact, someone even took my mom's!
If you could get the website, I'd appreciate it...don't go crazy though. I know you have lots to do yourself!!! You are so kind...
I don't have a name for my theme - more like 'summer garden'...We are using almost every summer flower in the cernterpieces and the colors are green and yellow (white accent)...I just kept thinking green grass and yellow sunshine...We are also getting married on the water, so I did contemplate a beach theme...
for favors we are having small pillar candles for place card holders and then at the seat there will be a candle holder...
Barbara - I think your theme is wonderful. If we were getting married around a national holiday, I would have went with that theme as well. We are getting married 12/15 so we are doing a winter wonderland theme, but I am still going to have flags given out by the d.j.
