They are raising the Terror Threat Level AGAIN

Im so tired of this... they get everyone all paranoid and nothing happens... (God willing nothing will happen again, EVER) then they lower it.

Government that cried wolf syndrom.

Better than crying for the deaths of innocent people...

I'd rather have the alert system and have people reporting anything weird they see than be passive about it and let it happen again without an effort to stop it.

NY has never been lowered. We have been at orange since 9/11. They are just raising the rest of country because of the recent terror attacks abroad.

I personally think this alert system will become ineffective if they keep raising it lowering it raising it again... people aren't going to take it seriously, even if it is working..

karen is right about NY...it is also raised to show the world that the US is on alert and hopefully divert an already planned atack

the part of this new alert system I am curious about...is GWB going to use it in his campaign next year...'this is what I did' yada yada yada

this alert system has been around for awhile... i just don't think its been so public. it wasn't for the public to use... jsut the government

Tracey, I think this would be an example of using the system more effectively. What good would it be if it was always on the same level?

Erica, I don't think this alert system takes any genious worth bragging about. Red has meant danger for a very long time. And honestly, I was a little disappointed that months after the creation of the Homeland Security cabinet, that this was the first output made public. I know there are tons of things we do not know about, nor should we, but I didnt get the 'unveiling' of the national alert system.

its not very effective when people stop paying attention to them since 'nothing has happened'. People will just ignore the alerts and not be so aware, then something WILL happen.

I don't really think there are too many things people can do other then be alert and report anything odd. For me anyway, the news about changes in terror alerts kind of reminds me to be more aware of my surroundings.

But I do see your point, it's kind of like car alarms. They are SO ineffective that I think they are trying to ban them somewhere (I read that in USA today so I am not sure where).

Fact is, they ARE going to hit us again somewhere, sometime, on American soil. I promise you people, it WILL happen.

I'm just so worn out and wrung out emotionally over worrying about when/where/why/how. I just wish the freakin other shoe would drop already. I don't see how it can be much worse than what we already went through.

A car backfired next to my Express Bus yesterday and everybody jumped and started hyperventilating.

Thrilled, I hope and pray that we have seen the worst here already but we don't know. God forbid the next attack is worse That's what scares me the most.

9/11 wasn't the first attack...Americans have been targets since we assumed world power status...and we will continue to be targets until we step down into an isolationism policy...

Yabbo - 9/11 wasn't the first terrorism attack, but the first on American soil. Attacking American interests in Riyadh and Casablanca etc., sad to say, aren't nearly as scary as having the Towers come down in your backyard. OR as personally affecting.

Isolationism. It'll never happen - Americans think it's their JOB to right the wrongs in this world, unfortunately. BUt you're right about that.

It's fascinating to me how they covet American bootlegged movies, CD's, watches, jeans, eat at McDonald's...but yet they want to murder us all so they can join Allah in heaven because we don't believe the same things they do. And because they think we are meddlesome.

9/11 was not the first attack on American soil. It was the largest and most deadly. Remember the car bomb in the trade center parking garage....in 93 I think?.

9/11 opened people's eyes to let them realize that we are not isolated and we need to take care of ourselves internally and protect our citizens. Security and the Government agencies have been beefed up trifold to what it was before and that's a good thing.

While I do think that another attack will happen (too many people hate the US for it not) I do beleive it will be on a lesser scale. And if it does happen we will have the resources in place to respond to it immediately.

How is raising the terror alert going to prevent anything? I don't get the 'I would rather cry wolf than cry over the death of innocent lives'. Do you honestly NOT do certain things when they raise the terror alert? It is a system designed to scare average citizens and make us re-elect Bush.
The gov't does not tell us any REAL info.

Terror attacks have been around even before the Crusades. People believe that they have a right to their way and violence will get it for them.
Isolationism. How do you do that in the age of the Internet and TV and a World Ecomony? It is impossible to be alone and just protect ourselves. Don't forget Isolationism allowed Hitler to get more and more powerful and kill millions of innocent people. It is never the answer. And since many of the anti-american sentiments steam from our 'secret' involvement in many countries (let's not forget to gave guns to little boys in the middle east to protect them from Russia- that was US). We are not the all-good doers in the World. See 'The Quiet American' and you can see an example of how we manipulated the Vietman War to begin! The sad part is we keep out of 'fights' like Bosnia when thousands of children are raped and tortured because there was no oil, special resource or benefit to getting involved. Our gov't has a lot more power then the average citizen knows about.
