Things we learned from not-so-great weddings...

Things we learned from not-so-great weddings...

Post things you have learned while attending someone else's wedding about what NOT to do at your own wedding!

I will start...

1) If your dinner is starting late, make sure you CH has enough food for everyone. I was at a wedding with 150 guests and the CH food consisted of 4 sparingly passed hor dourves and a large plate of raw veggies, dip and bread (this was at a fancy RH and a 6 figure wedding!!) The veggies disappeared fast, and everyone was still hungry and practically attacking the waiters for the passed food.

2) Have your photographer stay until the very end -- at a wedding, the photographer left after the cake cutting, but the bride and groom didn't even start to dance with the bridal party until the last hour of the evening.

3) make sure your band or DJ takes reasonable breaks and only during the time when people wouldn't be dancing anyway -- at a wedding, the band took 2 very long breaks after the meal, when people wanted to dance and there was no music!

4) make the dress code clear - at a wedding, people weren't sure what to wear, so there was everything from guys in tuxes and girls in gowns to guys in casual suits and girls in sundresses.

Make sure you have enough bartenders. I went to a wedding where people were waiting in line for a long time for drinks during cocktail hour. This would be unacceptable at my wedding.

don't allow bartenders to serve beer from 40 oz bottles.

Avoid mini beer bottle (they end up pilling up on tables b/c people order 2/3 at a time).

Make sure there is enough seating at the CH. I have been to several weddings where we were stuck standing, with a small plate and drink trying to eat with a third hand we didn't have.

I agree with CH seating.l One wedding we had to stand and it was so annoying-i wanted to eat! That was a must when we booked our hall!

Make sure to have people who will set up and break down your wedding - the worst wedding I have ever been to 1) did not serve alcohol and 2) expected the bridal party and the dates of the bridal party (me) to set up their wedding --- on the beach in August in South Carolina - and break it down - with the tide quickly approaching and later break down the reception during a torrential downpour! We decided that our gift was our manual labor for three hours!

I like this thread. This is giving me great ideas to make sure what should be covered. I would have never thought of this stuff.

Make sure there is a schedule and it is stuck to. I went to a wedding where it seemed like nothing was planned, and they crammed the bouquet and garter toos, bride dancing with her father, and cake cutting - all into the last 30 minutes. Plus, we spent at least the first 40 minutes of the reception with nothing but salad and soft music while we waited for the bridal party to finish taking photos.
