Think I'm going to tell my boss...

that I'm pregnant sooner than later. I know most of you said to wait as long as possible but I think I need to reveal that I'm pg to my colleagues soon. I'll be 13 weeks this Saturday, so it will officially be my 2nd trimester. I was going to wait until after the new year, but now I'm thinking to tell him before Christmas. It's really hard holding it in and it's frustrating. I'm actually having a hard time with not being able to talk about it at work. I guess what I'm thinking now is the what's the difference between telling them at 14 weeks vs. 17 weeks. I just need some reassurance that it's okay to tell them.

Also, any advice on what exactly to say? I have weekly meetings with my boss, which is when I'll probably tell him. Should I just say 'I have some news, I'm pregnant'?

Re: Think I'm going to tell my boss...

Congrads soon to be mommy!!!!

I was so excited when I found out I was prego that I has to tell everyone. I told my boss the next day (I was only 5 weeks). Its a happy time. Being prego didnt affect my performance and I worked until June 17th, DD was born on the 19th. The only thing I would worry about is if you arent going to be coming back to work is telling him your prego will affect your bonus (if you get one).

Re: Think I'm going to tell my boss...

I think that 12-13 weeks is long enough to wait to tell your boss about the pregnancy. I would probably wait till I was atleast 10 weeks myself to tell people at work, but I am not close with any of them. If we were all friends I would probably find it very difficult to keep the secret.
Also, if you are planning on NOT returning to work, do not tell anyone yet. You could be really hurting your current job if they think you are leaving for good.

Re: Think I'm going to tell my boss...

I do not have anyone at work that I would consider a 'friend', I've only been here 9 months and I work in a really big office. I am NOT planning on returning to work, but I'm not telling them until I actually give my notice around the end of April/ beginning of May. So, until then, I will act as if I am just taking maternity leave and then tell them I changed my mind. I'm not going to care what they think, I have a right to do what I want, and need to protect myself and my baby too, so I'm going to try not to feel bad that I will know all along that I'm quitting.

If I do this, then do you think before Christmas is okay? I never expected that this would be so hard. It's too bad that we have to worry what people will think in the workplace. We don't need that uneccessary stress.

Re: Think I'm going to tell my boss...

I would tell them when you feel comfortable- before Christmas is fine.
And if you quit before giving birth you are not going to get your 6-8 weeks of disability payments. Better to not say anything at all until 2-weeks before you are supposed to return to work. Also, you want to make sure you get any bonus or raise during your pregnancy. If they think you might not come back, you will probably be overlooked for that stuff.

Re: Think I'm going to tell my boss...

As far as I know, disability has to be paid back if you don't go back to work, so I'm not even going to bother with any paid leave (I will have to confirm this). Also, I work for the gov't so we don't get bonuses So, I guess I'll plan for before Christmas. I get a knot in my stomach just thinking about telling my boss!

Nina Nina - Take a breath and calm down.
If you feel the need to tell your boss now go ahead and do so. I wouldnt tell them that you dont plan to come back at this point. I would wait until after the baby comes for that.

They cant fire you because you are PG and they cant take away any benefits either. Even if you work for the Govt. That is of course unless they are willing to face a discrimination lawsuit.

Re: Think I'm going to tell my boss...

I just told my boss, and he was much nicer than I thought he was. I planned for today, cause he'll be out of town for the next 3 days. I worried for no reason-I'm so silly! He immediately said congratulations and was smiling and said he's happy for me. I told him I don't think it's affected my work so far, and don't see it affecting it at all. He didn't have much to say to that, so that's good. Then, he said to call so and so for leave information, and if I can't get the information to let him know and he'll help me.

Whew, what a relief!
Thanks for your advice!
