Thinking About Having Dress Made

Does anyone have the name of a good dressmaker? I'm plus-sized (16W) and I'm thinking about having my dress made. I live in East Northport, NY.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have enough time to get that done? I don't know of anyone, but I feel like it takes a long time.

Oh, I'm changing the date of the wedding -- it's not official but it will probably be in March 2009!

It doesn't take a long time, unless the dressmaker is really busy. And in some cases its actually cheaper this way than to buy. The real challenge is finding someone that has the right skills for the type of dress you want.

Skill and experience often dictates price. There are some dress makers on etsy.com seek it out. I'm getting my 2nd dress made from a designer there.

Etsy.com, OK. Do I just ask for dressmakers on their chatroom?

I hear there's a place called Alta Moda, maybe in Bellmore?
I just decided to get my dress made for me after looking for three months. All of the bedazzled stuff really wasn't my style, so I was looking for something more simple. I went into a dress store here in Philadelphia (getting married in Long Island- planning from here) and looked at amazing dresses totally out of my price range. They suggested having it made. They first quoted me $4000 for a silk shantung gown with a bubble on the bottom, but pretty plain otherwise. I thanked them and almost walked out, since I cannot afford that. They came down to $2600, and I think I'm going to do it. That includes everything, and I guess I'm going to cut corners elsewhere to do it. I'm excited about basically getting to design my own dress, and having it custom fit to my body.
Just a warning- I went to another store last week, and they offered to make it too- for $800! I was so excited. Then I asked to see samples of their custom work, and when I saw the pictures, I cannot explain the degree of hoochy. And I'm no snob- the dress I was going to buy before was only $599, and I LOVED it, but I need to have so much work done to it, I decided that this may be the best way to go. Good luck!

Re: Thinking About Having Dress Made

well, i do know of a dress maker and i think he 's awesome. I can get info and will forward it to your FM. But there is a website called plussizebridal.com that is really resonable and replicas of the dresses you see on alfred angelo although he carries as well in larger sizes but $$$$$ but this website looked very reasonable in price averaging about $800. My cousin is plus size and was helping her look for dresses as well.

Good Luck!

Hope i helped a bit
