this is why 13 year olds should NOT have a cell phone

Last night at my uncles my aunt was complaining how she bought her 13 year old son a cell phone and when she got the bill it was $400.

Hmm could this be why his bill was 400 dollars... one night he was in his bedroom and he used his cell phone to call her sitting in the living room. It was nothing important, but rather to just annoy her.

he was at his friends house and was using his cell phone to call her. Why couldnt he just ask his friend if he could use his regular phone.

So I have come to a conclussion 13 year olds should not have cell phones.

I dont think 13 year olds need a cell phone regardless of the size of the bill they run up.

I agree. 13 year olds do not need them.

24 year old here, 30 year old FI and we dont have cell phones

We have them, DH uses his at work all the time. his job has him on the road. But mine sits in my purse, off most of the time with an uncharged battery the rest of time

we really dont need them and to have them is an expense we really cant afford right now.

Once I am working he said we will get the family share plan this way we have a phone god for bid there is an emergency

I agree. What does a 13 year old really need with a cell phone anyway? Give him a quarter to call home instead. Look at how much $$$ you'll save

I agree, my sister has one (she's my Dad's daughter) and she just calls her friends up for the dumbest crap. Or she'll call them from her cell, even though the house phone is right in front of her Oh well, it's my Dad's problem

My husband is in the cellphone business and he tells me all the times how they have 9 year old or smaller asking parents for a cellphone. They just don't pick a normal cellphone either, they want the most expensive one they have. He says usually the parent gets stuck with the junk cellphone and buys their children the most expensive cellphone. Some kids are just really spoiled.

I think its a good idea for kids to have them when they get to the age when they are out unshaparoned. (sp?). However, if the child is the type that can't manage his/her limit.... then I would get the prepaid kind... This way, if they run out of minutes for that month.. then they are out till next month!!!!

For safety reasons I think it is great to be able to call mom/dad at any hour from any place (as long as you got a signal!)

My neice has a cell phone beeper, email and a million other methods of communication.. she soo doesnt need all this at her age..

What i will say is if my son or daughter is going out somewhere on a friday or saturday like the mall, or skating or a party, i would give them MY cell phone so they could call me in an emergency..

I didnt get a beeper till I was 17 (and that was only because I was in a HS program where I went to school one week and work one week and the beeper was the best source of getting me) then a few months later I got a cell phone but after a while I just got so aggrivated at having it and I canceled it.

For the past few months though I've wanted a cell phone because I've been doing a lot of traveling to the city for job interviews.

I don't agree. A cell phone saved my 14 yr old cousin life. It's just the irresposible ones that shouldn't have one. The parents should just get them a prepaid.
FH and I constatntly keep a cell phone, he is a cop and whenever possible I send him little messages to check how he is doing and he sends something back really quick (where no one will see him).

if parents get their kids cell phones they should agree to only pay for the monthly service. My fiance doesnt like them, but when his car broke down, he was able to call for help right away. My fiances brother one month racked up about $600 one month.(many times using the phone while he was home with the phone free). So he had to pay the extra amount over their monthly plan.... I think that is a fair way

what they really need to do is stop people from driving while holding a cell phone in their hand. so many times i have gotten ****ed at a driver who almost gets into an accident with the car next to it cause theyre not paying attention

I agree to Butterfly..I HATE when people drive with their cell phones. It is the LAW!!!!

If I need to make a call...I pull over. It is NOT worth getting into an accident, or getting pulled over.

I agree cell phones should not be used while driving, not even hands free. I've seen people so much into their conversation (on hands free phones) that they still don't pay attention to the road.
