this might be a silly question but does anyone know if I can play a different song than the wedding march at the curch?

As far as I've seen it depends on your church. I would ask the director/priest that you've been in contact.
I hate the wedding march too.

It depends on your church. Most churches won't allow you to play any 'non-traditional' church music (like no popular songs or broadway songs, etc.).
But you could walk into something like Canon in D - that's what I am walking in to and that's usually allowed at most churches.
Talk to your priest or church organist. They should definitely give you a list of songs to choose from for every aspect of the wedding.

It does not need to be the wedding march, but churches usually restrict you to something classical/church-appropriate.

I think it really depends on the church you are getting married at. Some churches are more stricter than others.

Right.
There's nothing special about the wedding march, but the selection should be appropriate to the occasiona

We got married in a Catholic Church...
All the music at the ceremony was by Bach.
We didn't have the Wedding March.

My pastor has actually suggested not using the Wedding March because of what it was used for in an opera (not a big opera buff - but it was something doing with a murder happening on stage). So we're probably using Trumpet Voluntary instead for the recessional.
