what would you do with this room if this was the only LR area that a TV would go in....the french doors go out to the deck.
ETA: the photo is taken from the doorway when you come in the front door and the fireplace is smack dab in the middle, so what you see on the left of the fireplace is the same wallspace on the right side of it...it's one of those long rooms

My parents' house has 3 fireplaces. The one in the living room is much like this room, but that is more a sitting room without a TV, with couches facing the fireplace. In the master bedroom there is also a fireplace, and they put the TV to the left of the fireplace.

Re: This should be on the HOME board....but
Could you get a widescreen LCD or Plasma and put it over the fireplace?

Re: This should be on the HOME board....but
well, this would be the only space for the big screen LCD tv that rich wants so I was trying to envision it in the room.....
some of the other houses I saw were split levels, so there was a formal LR with a fireplace and a seperate family/great room down in the partial basement which would be GREAT

he DOES want a 52 or 60' LCD...but it was shown with a stand in Best Buy and I don't know if it was flat screen or if it was mountable....

My tv room is set up the same way...I would put a tv on the wall to the left of the fireplace and a couch on the wall across from the fire place..you may even have room to put a smaller couch or chair in the middle of the room.., but it might look cluttered..does that make sense?? I would fill the room first and than see if you have the space for that extra piece of furniture.

Maybe a corner uit between the french doors & fireplace for the tv? Or a corner unit on the other side of teh fireplace.

but what about the space to the right of the fireplace? there is a whole wall and facing the french doors are the windows on the front of the house

All true LCDs are flat screens and mountable. But at that size... he probably saw an LCD rear projection which looks like a regular TV and is not mountable.
In fact... that that size (over 50')... it was most likely an unmountable rear projection. They don't make LCDs that big yet (at least under 10k). It may have been a plasma.

On the other wall, maybe you can get an additional piece of furniture, like a curio, bookshelf..etc..

nope..he said it was an LCD, maybe it was 52'...he works near a best buy, so he goes on his breaks to drool over the TV's.

whichever side the tv is not on, you should put a book case or something to balance it out. And depending on what the windows look like you could maybe put a love seat in front/under them or maybe a bench or something

I don't recommend mounting it above the fireplace ... our Plasma is and we get neckaches watching TV

this is what the previous owners had done....
That's not bad, but it makes the tv the focal point, not the fire place, and sort of cuts off the other half of the room.
Sometimes with a long room, it is better to divide it into 2 areas, but that fire palc e is smack dab in the middle, so that is tough.

nope...just envisioning the possibilities in this one house...the others have actual seperate family rooms for a big TV.

I was just on Best Buy's website. Trust me when I say if it was 'LCD'... it was a rear projection LCD. The largest flat-panel LCD that Best Buy sells is a 45' from Sharp ($8000).
52' is a common size for rear projections. You can get rear projection in either DLP, LCD, D-ILA, or LCoS.
In fact I just did a search of all of ebay and there are no 52' flat LCDs out there. Found plenty of 52' LCD projections though. Its easily confuseable. They look 'flat'. They have 'flat' screens. But they are nothing more than a glorified rear-projection (those are not mountable).
If you don't believe me... tell him next time he is there to take down the model number.
Who knows... i could be wrong. But I doubt it.

Re: This should be on the HOME board....but
I like the way the old owers set it up overall, but if you were going to get a bigger tv, I'd get just a stand for the tv (w/room for the vcr etc. underneath) and then you could maybe put tall narrow bookshelves on either side of the doors.
