LATELY, MY PARENTS ARE FOREIGNERS AND I SHOULD BE MORE SYMPATHETIC BUT I CANT.
I took a course this weekend and no one spoke english let alone read it.
I was soo twisted, I definitley need therapy
Just seeing if anyone has same issues or advice

It bothers me when there seems to be no effort to learn english. For example, last week we had dinner delivered - the guy could not work the DOOR downstairs so DH had to go down to get our food and then count out the change for the guy because he no idea how to make change!

Christine I dont think thats a literacy problem, I think the guy just couldnt count

Maybe there was more to it since he couldn't open the door even though we were yelling on the intercom to pull the handle...LOL But still really annoying.

true story
i move to Miami quite a bit of years ago any how.
I was working for this Medical Office and it was pretty cool, they were teaching me spanish which was pretty neat. Since I speak italian I kind of got the hang of it.
This woman who worked there comes over to me and says you know 'Why would you move to Miami, if you dont speak Spanish?' You should have stayed in NY
Well I turned around and said last time I checked FLORIDA is part of AMERICA and you shouldnt of left Columbia if you didnt know how to speak ENGLISH
Well needless to say, She almost ripped my eyes out. But One stupid comment deserves another sometimes.
What annyoed me the most was if she asked me how to say a word in english I would help her and I enjoyed the fact that they were teaching me to speak spanish.

Me too. It's even WORSE here in the D.C. area. FH and I hate it here. There are way too many people in customer service jobs that can barely speak English. It's SO annoying

The people downstairs in the cafe here dont speak a word of english and i ordered EGG WHITES ON AN ENGLISH MUFFIN.. he gave me scrambled eggs on a plate!! so i said no, EGG WHITES , he said he didnt have any!! So i asked what are all those eggs.. he said for scramble...(i had to give up and take the scrambled!)

wow Im mean today, cant help it the guys that I work with set me off.
I love people all different kinds of people. But sometimes the ignorance not to want to learn brings out the worse in me.
My dad has lived in this coutnry for 32 years and he still cant speak english fully.

What bothers me is that they expect US to understand them! At workd, sometimes I'd answer the phone and they'd just start babbling 1000 words a minute in their language expecting me to know what they're saying.

Once time when my mother was in Key West for a cruise she stopped in some store to buy a bar of bath soap. After repeated requests to the store clerk with the broken english, the clerk said 'Maybe if YOU spoke english, I would be able to help you.' My mother only speaks english!

I feel the same way! My firm has a Moscow office in addition to our NYC office. Every so often I get phone calls from Russian people who as soon as I pick up the phone start rattling off in Russian, when I say I'm sorry but your going to have to speak English they get mad.
I had one lady yell at me and say how can you work for Russia ****** and not speak Russian I said because Russia ****** is our Moscow office I work for ****** ***** & Co here in NYC thats why.
