I took a course this weekend and no one spoke english let alone read it.

I was soo twisted, I definitley need therapy

I dont mind if foreigners speak broken english, I get very frustrated when they dont speak any english at all, if they come to this country shouldnt they make an effort to learn the basics first?... but what is most frustrating is the pregnant people who illegally sneak over the mexican border, have their baby here, then gain citizen rights cause of it.

I agree with this post 100%!!! The part I hate is how in my neighborhood, some people of certain countries take total advantage of our welfare system/food stamps. There have been numerous occasions where these people are on line at the supermarket draped in jewels and fur coats with their coach/prada/gucci everything and they're paying with their welfare stamps!!! Then there is me who's DH is a slave to the city as a cop praying that I have enough $$ to pay for my freaking milk and bread! UHH! I get pi$$ed! Believe me, my relatives that came over from other places had some help, however, the difference is that they worked their a$$es off to be dependant on themselves and to provide for their families!! Nowadays, I feel that these people take total advantage and come to this country EXPECTING handouts!! Totally unacceptable! These are the same people that refuse to aadjust their ways of life to fit how our country works! I understand that this is what our country is about, however, over the years, our system has completely fallen behind what it's initial purpose was. If you come here and need help to get on your feet, no problem, but do something to deserve it! Make an effort to adapt to our language or get off assisted living! Sometimes I feel that these foreigners look at someone like me on line at the supermarket trying to add up my food and laugh.....'Look at the stupid american digging for change when I get all this for nothing and I 'm filthy rich!'
Maybe we're missing something? Maybe we are stupid? It ****es me off big time!!!!

If you make a racial joke and say its just a joke - does that make it OK?

and to say 'these people' that is stereotyping at its finest...which can be construed as a hate crime...

think about the stereotypes that people could think about you.

I wasn’t going to respond to this thread; however, I feel the need to do so because of some of the statements made above. Frankly, I must say that I am appalled, and offended by some of it.

The assumption that most foreigners come to US to take advantage of the system is a myth. Because the majority of foreigners are hard working people who make contributions to the system. Many of them take jobs that an American-born individual will not take. Many work long hour for at wages far below the minimum wage, with no benefits and insurance. Many make contribution to the social security system, and many will never reap the rewards of their contribution.

I agree that there are people who abuse the welfare system. However, these people are American born, foreigners, nationalized Americans of all race, religion, and ethnicity. My family are foreigners and they have never been on the welfare system. They have worked extremely hard for the things they have accumulated.

Even though there are people who refuse to adapt, there are many who do. English is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and we who speak should try to have some compassion because we do not know that person’s situation. If my mother did not speak english when she came to country and she had to choose between putting food on her families’ table and learning perfect english, trust me the answer would be food on her families’ table.

(I was staying out of this but it seems to have turned into an anti-foreigners thread, so I had to jump in)

keep in mind this country, unlike most others, has no 'official' language. Sure english is most common and prevalant now, but in 100 years, it could be spanish or japanese, etc.

DH is first generation american. Both his parents came over from Europe 40+ years ago. While they both speak english, they do so with very heavy accents. His mother's not comfortable writing in english and often stumbles over words when speaking as well. She can be difficult to understand at times. One day she was complaining about some woman she worked with because she couldn't understand this woman's broken english (pot calling the kettle black, if you ask me)

I have no ability to learn laguages, so I sympathize with others trying to learn english. Sure its frustrating at times to try and communicate with them, but so what? America is the melting pot - embrace all cultures and languages.

First of all, my response to this post was by no means a 'hate crime' and I am extremely insulted at that comment. I am by NO means a supporter of any hate. For your information, I will be teaching in a inner-city SURR school in September and my DH is a NYC cop, we are by no means supporters of hate. However, I am also by no means a supporter of laziness!
Secondly, I guess there are sterotypes that could be assigned to my DH and I like hard-working, under paid american born city-slaves. Look, like I originally stated, there is nothing wrong with needing help and receiving it from the city but when THESE PEOPLE, and by that I AM sterotyping those that come here and DO NOT contribute to society and just have there hands out, when they come here and receive better benefits, and better medical plans than I do and have more $$ for food, and get rent-free housing, that ****es me off big time! Do something to deserve it for God's sake!!!!

Same s h i t, different day on this board. While I think all of you have a right to your opinons, CHILL OUT! I KNEW when poor wacky posted this some of you guys were gonna jump in and whale on her. I saw it coming. Utterly predictable. She was having a crappy day and had the balls to say what she thought instead of going all PC on everyone.

We live in a complicated society and difficult times and a little of what all of you said is true. All of your opinions are correct in some fashion. BUT CUT THE PC Crap! It's soooooo tired. People who truly express what they think is a lost art in this world and these times.
