This weekend is going to kill me!!

Okay, so not only is it mother's day, BUT my sister is also graduating with her Masters in Education and that's on Sunday too. Sooo, my mom and little sister are coming out to stay at our house Saturday night, then our whole family (my dad & stepmom, stepdad, little sister, me, Craig, graduating sis and her husband) is going to the ceremony - then out to eat to celebrate Graduation/Mother's Day. I'm not really dreading it, but at the same time, my mom is the biggest attention hog in the world and she's already been making comments about 'sharing' her day with my sister! It's not like we're ignoring Mother's Day or anything!!! ANd, my stepmom is going to be with us too - I love her to death, she is a wonderful person - it's just never happened that we were all togeher on this holiday, and I'm a little nervous that my mom is going to make a scene or make my sister feel guilty about the timing of the graduation..... I've already talked to my mom about it and she swears that she's not going to do anything to make anyone upset, but I KNOW her, and I really don't think she can get through the day without making a scene...
On top of all this, I STILL have to get three presents!!! Two mother's Day and one Graduation prez for my sister. Lord give me strength....
Any suggestions for keeping the peace/avoiding uncomfortable situations/good gifts?? Thanks for listening to yet another tale from the saga of my dysfunctional famliy!

Do Mom and step-mom get along okay? You might want to have 'assigned seating' at dinner with place cards or something if you can get into the restaurant before everyone's seated...?

Your mom has to realize that while Mother's day is every year, your sister's graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Good luck!

Thanks Farah
my stepmom is probably the most loving and friendliest person on this planet - she has the biggest heart and is just a real sweet woman. My mom is the problem. She's just a baby sometimes, and if she feels like she's not getting enough attention then she makes a spectacle of herself.... Sad thing is, my sister's first graduation from college was ruined by my mom bc of this, and she kinda got cheated out of celebrating her own special day, you know? As her big sister, I know how much that has alwasy bothered her, adn I'll be damnd if after all the hard work she's put into earning her Masters, if I'm going to sit by and let my mom's childish selfishness ruin this for her again. Drama, I swear!! anyhoo, my plan is just to keep a constant eye on my mom (yes, I'm the babysitter) so she doesn't feel the need to incite drama for attention, thus allowing my sis to enjoy her well-earned celebration. I'm hoping that will be enough....

Yeah I guess the trick is to make them both feel that it's only their special day - one because she wants/needs it and the other because she deserves it.

It's a great idea to keep an eye on your mom and maybe you can find a quiet moment to tell your sister just what you've said here - that you know how hard she's worked and that you're really proud of her.

Helena, it sounds like a wacky situation all around. Deep breaths and alot of wine will speed the weekend along just fine! Hang in there!!

Maybe your mom could use a reminder that Mother's Day comes EVERY year, but your sister's day is a once in a lifetime event. Good luck!
