Those in Grad School....

Did you start before, during, after the wedding?

Where do you go?

Are you working full time?

What do you think?

I'm in law school, graduating at the end of May!!

I started way before the wedding. I started the Fall of 2002 and I got engaged this past September. It's really hard to focus on school with wedding planning and LIW!

Re: Those in Grad School....

I'm finishing my MA in forensic psych at John Jay this summer (after I do my internship)---been pursuing it for one and a half years....I take 4 classes a semester (all day on Tuesdays from 2:00-10:30pm) and two classes in the summer. JJ requires 39 credits to complete the program (3 of which consist of the internship/externship credit)

I work full time as a midnight cop in the Bronx (not much time for rest or school-work at work), part-time as a paramedic (sometimes have spare time for school-work) and per diem teaching EMS. BUT, that being said, I also function just fine on 2-3 hours sleep a day--the majority of people can't do that.....

Most of the students in my program are either full-time students with no career, or work one full-time job and take 2-3 classes a semester. I think that's what you'll probably find here also. I am an oddity.

Hope this helps....good luck!!

I'm in grad school at Dowling College. I don't work full time cause I am currently student teaching fulltime. Its putting a strain on our wedding plans, but in the end it will be worth it.

I'm a law student, too, and graduating this May. It was definitely hectic planning a wedding, going to school, and working part-time, but you can definitely do it!

I'm in grad school down here in VA. I'm 1/3 of the way through my MA in Public Policy. I'm taking this semester off though. I work full time and go to school part time at night.

Re: Those in Grad School....

I just finished getting my Masters in Education this past Dec., and fortunately it was before I gotten engaged. I found it not as challenging as undergrad to be honest (b/c it was a subject area I greatly enjoyed and knew a lot about)---w/ the exception of the thesis

Yet I'd say definitely go for it or else you'll keep putting it off for one reason or another. If things get too trying, you can always take a semester off.

Good luck!

Me too! I'm working on my Masters in Forensic Psych at John Jay too. But, since I have a full-time job plus (sometimes I work up to 60 hours a week), in a completely different field, I'm only able to take one 8:25PM work a semester. It's going to take forever and when I'm done, I'll probably make a third of my current salary Plus, with the wedding, I'm taking off a semester and the summer class I want to take is full.

Quite honestly, it's a big pain juggling work, school & planning the wedding. And, my fiance is NYPD so his schedule is not consistent so he can't really go with me to vendor meetings.

Re: Those in Grad School....

i started my Masters a year before i was engaged. we got engaged august 28 so i took one course this past fall and im currently taking one this spring. i am not taking any courses this summer since we are getting married august 5. i will finish up by taking one course next fall and one more next spring. it's expensive and takes time to do the work that you really dont have while planning a wedding and going on with the rest of your life, so wait or start out slow by only taking one course at a time is my vote!

DH proposed the day before I started Graduate School

Where do you go?

I went to Rutgers. I finished 5 months before the wedding.

Are you working full time?

I started working full time during my last semester. I worked part time throughout the beginning and I took more than the recommended course load so I could finish early.

What do you think?

It was hard, but definitely worth it in the long run. I got a new job during my last semester (so, I didn't even have the Master's degree, yet) and got an $18,000 per year pay increase.

You can do it!

I'm about to graduate from Grad school! I got engaged half way through Grad school and I decided that I need to have a long engagement so I can finish college and get a job. My fiance was fine with it!
I go full time to Dowling College and I am a substitute teacher. When I eventually get a job as a head teacher the money is going to be great. I think Grad school is a million times easier than undergrad!

Re: Those in Grad School....

I was working full time, getting my masters at night during the wedding planning. I took 2-4 classes a semester at Stony Brook. I graduated in May and we got married in November. In July I start a doctoral program. It was financially difficult before the wedding, but I am glad I did, especially to give me time to finish my doctorate before I am 30 and want to have kids. I'll be working full time while getting my doctorate as well.

Before the wedding, and I'll be done before

I go to James Madison University

I do not work full time (it requires student teaching, as well ad a full course load each semester).

I'm glad I did it. Part of me wishes I had worked this year, but now I'm done and don't have to worry about any more school!

Re: Those in Grad School....

Started medical school in Fall of 2001...where I met FH. Engaged Dec.2003. We will be doctors in four weeks! Officially 'robed' on June 12th, one week after wedding. There have been times where the planning has been on the back burner occasionally b/c school stuff. But these days I spend lots of time finalizing and on LIW of course!
