those of you that had pre cana (natural birthcontrol)

those of you that had pre cana (natural birthcontrol)

Were you told about the 'natural' method of birth control that is like 98% effective in preventing pregnancy. It sounds really good but I'm scared that it's not really effective. I hate birth control pills.

I think they said you have to take a class for it to know how to do it.

isn't it that you have to monitor your discharge or something like that? and when it's a certain texture, you shouldn't have sex? please excuse me if what i just said is totally dumb- don't know too much about it. this is what i got from my FI's stories about what they would tell them in catholic HS.

they gave us the book but i didn't read it. too chancey for me- i'd rather the pill.

what about getting a shot every month?

Here is the site that says more about it. Apparently there are different methods that are all effective if done properly. I think I may take the class because I dont like to take the pill - I get high blood pressure

ok.. no way in hecccckkkkk would I chance those methods.

To be its basically the same as 'pulling out' ....still a way good chance you could get preggo.

Use condoms if you hate the pill!

But then why do they say its so effective. They give numbers like 97, 98%. You may be right though cause I certainly am not ready to be an 06 mommy.

The natural method is VERY effective...but the book taking charge of your fertility...it will explain it in there

How do you know? DId you use it cause I see you're a mommy to be now.

natural method is a combination of pulling out and knowing the timing of your cycle for when you're most fertile.

The method is extremely effective, if you can get your timing down and your partner is a 'pull-out king'. Otherwise this method is extremely ineffective!

Unfortunately my cycles are so random this method is not practical for me. I'm not saying this a bad method to use, but it certainly isn't for everyone. You have to be incredibly detailed in tracking your cycles and being responsible. Even if my cycle was normal - i wouldn't go this route... it's too much work.

But only you can choose your BC methods.

Our PreCana sponsors gave us a booklet about it and said we should go sign up for the class. She said it is VERY EFFECTIVE.... Mind you, this couple HAS 9 KIDS. I guess if it wasnt effective she might have 20 kids.

My cousin is a doctor and she said it is very effective! You just need to some research and find a gyn that is willing to help you understand it. Good luck!

it can be very effective if you are healthy and have no gyno issues. if your periods are irregular or you do not have time to check yourself every single day..then watch out.

i went to catholic high school and if you only knew how many babies were conceived using this method lol

Sure, it's effective if you do it right, but it's a TON of work to track your basal body temp and discharge texture...I'm assuming that this is why there's a class to learn how to do it. I'd say that unless you're willing to put in some serious time and effort, it's probably not something that will work for you.

Like my doctor says, 'You know what I call people who use the 'pull and pray' method?....Pregnant!!!!'

when the priest did that part of the encounter weekend he made reference to the old rhythm method, (am I allowed to write rhythm method?) he said that in the rectory he and the other priests jokingly referred to it as, VATICAN BINGO

It can work if you're REALLY in tune with your cycle/ovulation and your periods are extremely regular

Yep! I am reading this book right now. My friend used to get pregnant and has used it to prevent pregnancy since her son was born two years ago!

crashing this thread since i'm not catholic.....

they tell you it's so effective for 2 reasons:

A-to get you to use it and not use the 'taboo' BC methods the rest of the world uses that is in fact 99% effective (obviously only abstinence is 100%) because long ago, they decided other methods were wrong or dirty and therefore against the church. i'm sure that if, like others said, you have a super regular/easy to predict cycle and your FH/DH is great at 'pull and pray' that it is that effective. [oddly, didn't they decide that you can use condoms to prevent AIDS as long as you weren't using it to prevent pregnancy? i thought i heard that somewhere...don't quote me on that, i could be wrong]

B-because IF you do it 100% right, then it's 97-98% effective...but like any BC, it must be done right everytime....personally, I think that other methods are easier to pull off correctly...but that's just me. in the heat of the moment i'd surely forget my 'consistency' and my basal temp.

no matter what method you use, you have to use it dilligently for it to be as effective as the product/ideaology claims it to be.
