those of you that had pre cana (natural birthcontrol)

Original post by roxyvelas

Were you told about the 'natural' method of birth control that is like 98% effective in preventing pregnancy. It sounds really good but I'm scared that it's not really effective. I hate birth control pills.

I think they said you have to take a class for it to know how to do it.

I chart my cycles and use the natural method. Just to clear up some of the misconceptions I've read in the above posts, it has absolutely nothing to do with 'pulling out', you don't have to be Catholic to follow it and you can definitely use it if you have irregular cycles (I've never had regular cycles and by practicing this method I have actually learned ALOT about my body).

I've been charting for about 9 months so I would have the hang of it before the wedding. After about 3 months, it was like second nature for me-no big deal. I highly recommend the book TCOYF and The Art of Natural Family Planning if you are interested in learning more about it.

Thanks for all the great info. I think I may get that book and read more about it.

When one of my friends got married, her mother told her she should do this, that it 'worked for her'. My friend said 'Uh, Ma, you had 8 kids....'

At our pre cana class no one mentioned BC. I was surprised.
I thought about using this method. Now I'm all confused. I guess I'll have to read up on it.

When I was in Pre-Cana the guy giving the presentation said that guys forced girls to take BC pills since they don't care if they get cancer.
But that if they REALLY love you then they would do the natural method.

The guy's wife swatted him and apologized on his behalf... I was so shocked I almost fell out of my seat. FH looked at me and was like 'they cause cancer?'...geez....

IMO do whatever works for you. For me its the pill, but if you are willing to work at it then go for the natural planning.

i saw the post title and my first thought was 'natural birth control? do you mean abstinence????'

anyhoo, i use BC...

A - because it regulated my periods
B - i have absolutely NO pain or cramping during my periods and thats just heavenly!
C - I'm too scared not to!

They never mentioned anything to DH and I about a natural method during precana. In fact, thinking about it now, i dont think they mentioned sex once!!!

Natural family planning is quite effective if it is done correctly. You have to chart your cycles so you know when you are fertile. It has nothing to do with 'pulling out.'

Although it is endorsed by the catholic Church as a natural form of birth control, it is a great option for ALL women that don't want to rely on chemicals.

There was a study done on a group of women in a completely impoverished area of India. These men and women could not support any more children. A team of gynnecologists taught classes on how to do it effectively and further research on the same group of women showed a .01% increase in children. it works!

I 100% agree with your post! It has nothing to do with being Catholic or not. It has to do with you and your partner understanding your body. Ok, so it may be a little more complex then remembering to pop a pill, but all women should be so aware of their bodies. This way when they are ready to conceive, they will know what time they are most fertile and how to read their bodies signs.
