I know a teen who is currently covered under her parents insurance until shes 23 only if she attends school fulltime. Shes now pregnant and the chances of her attending school fulltime are getting slim. What insurance will she be covered by if she loses her parents insurance? Also what insurance can the baby get after its born? I gotta also mention that she will still be living at home with parents so will their income play a role?

Re: Those that know alot about health insurance
she will have none unless she gets a full time job or she can inquire to see if her parents have some kind of cobra plan but that is really expensive.
Is she under 18 because if she is she would have insurance. After 18 you need to be in school full time.

I do believe she would be able to go to planned parenthood for nothing.

Re: Those that know alot about health insurance
well if she would work part time or a job that pays little then there are health plans out there for her. I know theres one that you have to show you make like under $400 a week, and the plan itself costs about $70 a month i believe. I know my friend was on this years ago when she worked for a place that was off the books and didnt offer insurance. She was lucky bc since she got paid off the books she was able to say she made less than that. So there are options out there for her.

sorry to crash when she goes to the doctor she will be asked if she has insurance and if she doesnt or will lose it soon they will give her and the baby medicaid with some other plan...her visits and hospital stay will be free. also when the baby is born the baby will have it for about a month or 2 unless she will not be working at all she will continue to have medicaid hope this helps

she'll be turning 18 a few weeks before her due date which is the concern. she will be covered until the end of that month though.

I know she will have basic checkups covered but my friends cousin has the same issue and for instance her sonograms were not covered. Does the babies father have a FT job?

the plan i mentioned, i do know you have to make under a certain amount so if they see you make a little bit of money and need coverage.
But I do agree with the post about medicaid, i would have her look into that.

well sonograms and all prenatal care are covered by her fathers insurance. the main concern is after the birth. no he does not hes a year younger so with another year of high school left there is no full time job in the near future.

If she is under her fathers insurance yes than everything will be covered but once she is not and if she is still pregnant than I don't think the sonograms will be anymre.

now i dont know if you know the answer but if she is living with her parents as a young mother will she be considered independent since she has a child and be eligible for medicaid and other programs such as WIC?

I am really not sure but I all i know is that even if you live at home once you are 18 if you are not in school FT you are considered an adult and responsible for your own insurance.
I am sure like some of the other girls have stated that they do have plans for girls in her situation

Re: Those that know alot about health insurance
Well the baby can be covered under medicaid and if I'm not mistaken you are covered under your parents health insurance until the age of 21 and its extend until the age of 23-25 (vaires depending on insurance) if you are still enrolled in school full time. I would double check w/ her parents insurance because I am 99% positive insurance is good until the age of 21 whether you're enrolled full time or not. But after 21 you have to be enrolled in school full time. Only problem is that the baby will not be covered under her parents insurance so she would still have to look into medicaid or some other health insurance plans for the baby. Also keep in mind that most companies you can work I believe it 25-30 hours/week in order to qualify for Health Insurance, so they wouldn't have to work the full 40 hr week.

As far as WIC and Medicaid go, yes as long as she is still living under her parents roof she will have to provide information pertaining to her parents income and as to how much monetary support she is getting from them in order for her to qualify for WIC and Medicaid.

Re: Those that know alot about health insurance
if shes a NYS resident she can be eligable for Free health insurance or Family Health Plus. All she has to do is go to a hospital and ask to sign up for it.
Jen I don't know a lot about this but I do know that the state has some plans and most doctors are required to take it.
HealthyNY or something like that.
I know working may be difficult BUT something to know...Starbucks offers medical benefits even for part time workers. So do a lot of hospitals. Maybe something to consider.

http://www.bcbs.com/issues/medicaid/ The joint federal and state Medicaid program provides health coverage for more than 40 million low-income Americans, mostly pregnant women, children, people with disabilities and the elderly. Increasing enrollment, rising healthcare costs and the decline of employer-sponsored health coverage continue to put pressure on the financial stability of the Medicaid program.
