I know a teen who is currently covered under her parents insurance until shes 23 only if she attends school fulltime. Shes now pregnant and the chances of her attending school fulltime are getting slim. What insurance will she be covered by if she loses her parents insurance? Also what insurance can the baby get after its born? I gotta also mention that she will still be living at home with parents so will their income play a role?

Re: Those that know alot about health insurance
tell your friend to tell the medicaid office that she pays her parents rent...but even that will be difficult if she has no proof that she has a part time job.. even income as little as 150$ a week would work.

Your friend can get Medicaid, WIC and food stamps...she can get it all without having a job. even if she lives in her parents house, i think the only 1 that askes about her parents income is food stamps & all she has to say is she lives there but does not prepare or share food with them. As for medicaid, when you give birth they ask you which insurance your baby has, because they cannot be born w/o insurance, because thats who pays for those 2 days your baby stays in the hospital. You can get medicaid even if you have no social security number and are pregnant.....so she can get medicaid. They also dont ask for if her kids father has a job, cash assistance welfare are the only ones that ask those question becasue of the cash they give you.
also wanted to add that medicaid pays for anything you can think of, theyll cover all her sonograms and prenatals. And that when i gave birth I was covered by HIP insurance through my father, because i was a fulltime student, and they told me my daughter has to be born with the same insurance as me, which is weird i had never heard of that, and my fathers insurance didnt cover her so i had to switch...so tell your friend that she needs to double check on that and have to be under the same insurance as the baby. she can get an insuarance card for them even when they arent born yet, the card just says newborn w/her last name.

I know she will have basic checkups covered but my friends cousin has the same issue and for instance her sonograms were not covered. Does the babies father have a FT job?
well sonograms and all prenatal care are covered by her fathers insurance. the main concern is after the birth. no he does not hes a year younger so with another year of high school left there is no full time job in the near future.
If she is under her fathers insurance yes than everything will be covered but once she is not and if she is still pregnant than I don't think the sonograms will be anymre.
now i dont know if you know the answer but if she is living with her parents as a young mother will she be considered independent since she has a child and be eligible for medicaid and other programs such as WIC?
shes not independent, but her family household will only be counted as her and her daughter when it comes to wic and medicaid, and once your eleigible for medicaid you can get food stamps too

Re: Those that know alot about health insurance
I work for an insurance company and she should be entitled to continue her benefits through COBRA. It's a continuation of the same level of benefits that she had while covered under her parent. She's entitled to keep the COBRA for a maximum of 36 months and it's on a self pay basis. Now the only thing with COBRA the rates can be very expensive. I work in the COBRA dept. and effective 1/1/09 the rate for full coverage is $404/mo. for single coverage (that's for my company; each company's rates are different). Now yes that is expensive to most but it still comes out way cheaper if you are one to actually utilize the benefits. Full coverage through my insurance also means no co-pays or deductibles. You have no out of pocket costs. Now if the COBRA is something that she does, once she has the baby she CAN opt to have the baby added on and pay the difference because she will now go from paying a single rate to paying for dual coverage. A lot of my members state that COBRA is not something they can afford and I ALWAYS recommend that they seek out some state mandated programs like Medicaid, Family Health Plus or Child Health Plus. She should definitely qualify because although she still lives with her parents, she is a dependent of herself. The baby will definitely qualify for child health plus. I have many members who are on COBRA for themselves and spouses and have their dependents on child health plus. She has a few different options. If you have any other questions, feel free to fm me.

she will have none unless she gets a full time job or she can inquire to see if her parents have some kind of cobra plan but that is really expensive.
Is she under 18 because if she is she would have insurance. After 18 you need to be in school full time.
she'll be turning 18 a few weeks before her due date which is the concern. she will be covered until the end of that month though.
Just wanted to add that they may want to check the age thing again with their insurance company. I know each insurance company's policies are different but i know for mine, we cover up to the age of 19. Once the child reaches 19 they are terminated form the insurance unless they can provide proof that they are enrolled in College full time. We would then cover up to the age of 23. They would just have to submit proof of full time status every year until the age of 23. MOST insurance companies DO NOT terminate coverage at 18 because many dependents are still in high school and would not be able to prove full time college status at that point. So tell her to make sure about the age thing because again my insurance company and a few others that we have relationships with all have termination ages of 19 NOT 18. Now some companies differ in the fact that they may cover up to 23 and some up to 25 providing the dependent is in school full time.
