Just curious to know what your experience was. MOH speaks fluent French and told me that I might not feel welcomed or enjoy myself b/c I don't speak French. Basically that I would have a rough go b/c the citizens aren't too friendly to non-French speakers...

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I have not been to Paris, but my DH has, twice. He doesn’t speak more than a few words of French and he absolutely loved it there. He is very well traveled (especially in Europe) and never had any major travel related issues. He only speaks English fluently but he does know a few other languages somewhat.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I went as a sophomore in college. I didn't have any problems - and loved it there! I think that if you make an attempt to talk in French and order food in French, they are more sympathetic than if you just talk to them in English (and assume that 'everyone' knows English). The guys on our tour had a little more problems than the girls (finally pays to be a girl! )

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I speak pretty fluent French - was there about ten years ago - but I did hear a lot of English being spoken in the main tourist areas. Only when you travel away from the city do you really need a phrase book.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
i went to Paris, as long as you try a little, they are really nice and helpful. Many europeans speak several languages including english... in fact, the only rude folks i encountered were non-French.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
Had an amazing time there and speak NO French. I did feel a little uncomfortable since I went there right after a trip to Germany where everyone is really friendly, I didn't feel like people were too welcoming in general but it was fine!!

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
Thanks so much for your honest feedback. I was a little thrown off when MOH told me this considering I've travelled through many parts of the world and didn't speak the language and always felt welcomed!
Hopefully I can get by with some Italian/Spanish!

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I studied abroad in London during college. 2 friends and I traveled to several countries during our 5 1/2 week break between classes and finals. None of us spoke French. We went to several French-speaking countries, but France was the most difficult place to get around and communicate with others. I liked Paris, but it was one of my least favorite places that we visited.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I love Paris. I go almost every year. I am not fluent in French, but know enough to get by. In my experience as long as you TRY to speak their language they appreciate that so much and will be more than willing to help you anyway they can. Contrary to popular belief I find the French to be wonderful people. All they want is for you to try to speak their language. I bought these CD's at Barnes and Noble by Pimsler, you get I belive 20 CD's. I learned so much. I can't write it or read, but I sure as hell can speak it. If your really interested give it a shot. They will love you for learning their language.

My parents went and dont speak French and they loved Paris the best out of anywhere they traveled to! They said everyone was nice and helpful and most people spoke English.
Oh, and we are going on our HM there too along with London and Rome- so excited!

I have been there and had a wonderful time. I don't speak a word of French and everyone was very nice to me.

Been to Paris and other French speaking countries, and never had a problem with people being unfriendly.

I'm thinking of going this summer. Want to take a trip with just mom. No more than 8 days - just Paris.

I had a very similar experience. I was in Paris in Feb of this year. I have traveled abroad quite a bit and Paris was my least favorite place. I DO speak French, my FH doesn't and neither of us enjoyed it. The architecture was beautiful but the people weren't friendly. I met a handful of 'nice' people while I was there, but that was the exception. I personally wouldn't go back anytime soon.

a woman i work with used to travel to paris all the time on business and would agree with your MOH. she said that it is a beautiful city - but the people do not really have a 'welcoming' personality - at least this is what she found. basically she said - new yorkers speaking french...
i dunno - you might as well not worry about it and go if you want to.

I was there a couple years ago. I don't speak French and I was fine. I actually thought it was a bit easier than Italy. I didn't find the natives to be too helpful there!

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I was there about 10 years ago--I found the people to be unhelpful. Maybe you can join a tour group or something--I would definitely recommend a tour of some sort if u don't speak french. It was hard taking taxi's and buses b/c of course, not everyone speaks english.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I went to Paris about 10 years ago, right after I graduated from college. I have to say, it wasn't my favorite place. In my experience, I did find the people rude. However, as you have seen from the posts here, many people have had a good experience there. One thing I will say is, it's a beautiful city. It's worth going just to see the Eiffel Tower at night.
