Just curious to know what your experience was. MOH speaks fluent French and told me that I might not feel welcomed or enjoy myself b/c I don't speak French. Basically that I would have a rough go b/c the citizens aren't too friendly to non-French speakers...

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
Dh and i went, we don't speak french, and everything was fine. We tried for basic words- please, thank you, how much is that, etc. No one was rude to us and seeemed pleased when we tried our awful french. It is REALLY easy to get around Paris w/o speaking french, IMO. You'll have a great time!

Studying in Paris was one of the hardest experiences in a fairy tough life. If you're just passing through, the people probably won't bother you too much.

I was born in France... I can tell you all the ins and outs of Paris.
Yes, there are so rude people in France but it's the case all over the World. For example when I moved to NY, people (from another state) told me all NYers were rude. HA HA HA I went to the City so many times and sometimes asked for directions/help. I was always treated nicelly.
FM if you need more info. I will be glad to help you out.
Most hotels, tourist areas do speak English. The population... not so much! But you can show them maps and they will 'try' to help you out.

Thanks so much for your honesty! I'm not so much worried about the rude people - I am from Brooklyn! I was just worried about being completely lost not speaking French!
I'll probably take you up on that offer. Thanks so much - that's very sweet of you.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
i have been to paris and a few other areas in france and some french parts of switzerland. i took french for a few years in school, but by the time i went to france all those skills were gone. but i did make an attempt and that was appreciated. they can speak english in that country, more so than in italy or spain, so you wont be totally lost.
pick up a phrase book and some CDs and maybe sign up for an adult education class.
have fun!

Or you can do what I did, they spoke to me in French and I would answer in Spanish. Dont ask me why... But I the majority knew English.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
Just learn some key words and phrases, and do the best to try and speak simple things in french. I'm sure you'll still enjoy it there, even without being fluent in the language.
If you have to know how to speak a language fluently to have a good time in a foreign country, no would would be able to travel. Go and have a great time!

I had a very similar experience-I lived in Paris for a few months and had no problem getting around or visiting places at all-and I was never able to really pick up the language. The only problem I encountered was buying clothing/sizes. I couldn't get the conversion right. Oh well. Other than that, I had a very easy time of it. Paris has tons of tourists in it and the people who work in the tourist or service industries seem to cater to them. If they see you at least trying to speak the language, they will speak English if they know it (and most seemed to).
An example of how accommodating the city is-I went to see several movies and the theaters had the same movie showing on different screens in your choice of English or w/French voice over.

I didn't find that at all! I didnt speak french well - only took it in school for 2 year - and everyone in paris spoke english to me. the waiters were patient and answers questions, all of the tourist places have people that speak english and I didn't think the people were rude.

That's not bad! I don't think kids will be back to school yet so some people will still be out of Paris. August is the big month for parisians to be out of the City. It's usually mostly tourists in the summer.

It all depends where you go in the City. Some waiters are very rude but not just to foreign people... it's to Everybody. There are rude and nice people everywhere.

Re: Those who have been to Paris, France
I have been to France twice and had two totally different experiences. The first time was to the French Riviera (Nice to be exact) and did not have a very good experience whatsoever. People were extremely rude to us, despite the fact that one of the people in my group was fluent in French. We got lost in a very bad part of town and no one was willing to help us, among other things. Needless to say, my experience didn't leave a very good taste in my mouth. A few years later though I went to Paris and had a wonderful time. The city is absolutely breathtaking and I found the people to be much more friendly and helpful. In the main touristy areas (hotels, museums, the bigger shops, etc) much of the staff speaks English so you will be okay. The city is IMO the most beautiful in Europe! Enjoy!

South of France is VERY different than Paris, weather, accent, etc.... Funny, people in the South of France think people from Paris are rude... It's kind of like here in the US (North and South)
