Re: those who live in condo

me and my FH live in a complex we live in one of the co-ops. i love it cause we dont have to worry bout mowing or shoveling. whenevr we need somethin fixed we just call maintenance. its great not having those types of responsibilities

Re: those who live in condo

i would buy a condo over a co-op- condos are easier to sell and get mortgages for (no co-op board) and I know people with co-ops that when they call maintenance, its fixed like cr@p and ends up being a bigger problem (had a friend who's upstairs neighbor had the pipes burst - months later there is mold in their co-op )

FH and I were looking at condos and houses, but we decided to have a larger mortgage and buy a house. we would have grown out of a condo too quickly - and moving is a PITA.

but if you are deciding to rent or get a condo, get a condo!

Re: those who live in condo

We live in a condo in MD so I can't give you advice abouts location, but I can say that I love having a condo. It's great that I don't have to worry about paying my utilities or mowing the lawn, shoveling snow or replacing a roof. All I have to be concerned with is what is inside of the walls of my unit. FH and I have never owned before so we figured that we would start small. There are so many things that can go wrong with owning a home, it's nice to know that we have reduced some of those problems with a condo.

i guess it depends on the board and severity of the problem - my friends werent even the ones who caused it, the guy upstairs was fixing his own plumbing and caused a flood - they were away when it happened so when they came back there was water all in their apartment - so the co-op board just fixed the visible stuff, not checking to see if water got anywhere in the ceiling but didnt drip - and a year later they have to have mold taken off.

We live in a co-op. We bought the co-op 2 yrs. ago and have not had any major problems. The only thing that I can say is it's the BEST!! Maintenance is ALWAYS available and prompt. My upstairs neighbor had a leak into my bathroom and I needed to have a piece of the bathroom ceiling replaced. Everything was done in a timely fashion and they even left everything back to normal including the paint job!

Def a problem w/ that specific co-op and their board. I had a similar issue and it was all resolved nicely. I think it all depends.

Re: those who live in condo

I lived in a Co-Op and loved it. I never had any problems with the neighbors or getting things fixed. I also had no problem selling it either.

When my husband and I got engaged we bought a condo and hated it so much that we just sold it and bought a house. The condo was a lot of work and everything on the inside is YOUR responsibility but there are many rules. For example we had to replace the sink in our kitchen and need to shut the water off in the unit. Well we had to get written approval to do that because all the units surrounding us also had to be shut off. We can hear everything going on in other units and also my neighbors are VERY noisy and opinionated.

I'm sure a house will be alot more work but atleast we will have a backyard!!! No more walking the dogs.....

We've been looking a lot at condos/houses lately and it seems that condo's in our area are just as much or even more expensive than some houses! If we're going to pay that much, we'll prob just go for a house.

But, we're looking in western nassau south shore. It might be different in other areas.

I looked at Co-ops all weekend and honestly for the money and the space I think it is better to get a house so that is on my agenda for next weekend!

I bought a condo last year in Holtsville. It's 1515sq. ft. ( bdrms, 2.5 bath, bigger than most houses that are more expensive. We love it. I highly recommend condos if you can find the right one. Some are just too small but we found a very good size where we have room to grow in it!!! Good luck!

DH and I live in a Condo in Queens. I really love it but its not something we'd want to live in long term. We have a one bedroom and while it is a nice size for us two, we can't have a family while living here. I think it is a better alternative to renting since you will own it.

Me and fh are currently in a co-op. We are currently looking to buy a house. My biggest worries are the maitenance involved in a house - lawn, trees, roof, etc. I am scared to death since we have none of those responsibilities now. I like living in a co-op but wished I had a backyard. My best advice is too talk to people who live in the condos you are looking at. They will most likely tell you how it is.

I think it's a personal preference...DH and I are thinking of looking at condos/townhouses to buy b/c we have both lived in NYC apts for 8+ years now and love apt living. Not ready for a house just yet. DH is not handy so we love having a super who come to fix things that go wrong.

I grew up in Rockville Centre and would love to move around there....but DH works in CT so we are actually looking at either CT or Westchester County, NY.

I hope to live back on LI again someday though! Love the island!!!

DH and I first looked into condos. But they really weren't that much cheaper than the house we ended up buying, especially when you add in maintence.

We live in a co-op now and we love it. It's a good place to start off in and it's good if you don't want the headache (or expense) of a house right away. They take care of everything and you don't have to worry about a thing.

We recently signed a contract for a house and are looking to sell our co-op in Bayside! FM more more details
