Model Haircuts A Cheap, Easy Way To Save Money At The Salon

MARCH 15TH, 2004

Many people know hair services at a New York salon can really cut into your budget. Some places can charge well over $100 for a trim.

Well, it doesn’t have to be that way, because NY1 found when it comes to hair care, sometimes the best things in life are free.

“As a model, you can get a haircut at a great salon for a discounted rate [or] next to nothing,” says Lauren DeCarlo of New York magazine. “You just have to know where to look to find it.”

That’s right, if you’re willing to be a guinea pig, you'll be blown away by this opportunity. During salon training sessions, you can get a professional haircut at a reduced rate, or for free.

“We are an educational source for experience stylists, so the opportunity for models is that they get great haircuts, but we are mainly showing experienced stylists new techniques and a new approach,” says Bronwen Robinson of Bumble and Bumble.

DeCarlo took NY1 to a few salons to see what it’s all about. First up, Bumble and Bumble recently opened an education center where seasoned professionals take classes to brush up on their skills.

When it comes to the models, each class has different requirements.

“First, it usually begins with a consultation night,” says DeCarlo. “You go in and they will assess you hair, see what you want to do and what can be done with your hair and the type of hair that you have. Then you follow up with an appointment, and a few weeks later they will do the cut.”

But it’s not that cut and dry. You should know that even though it’s free of charge at Bumble and Bumble, you are paying with your time. A haircut can take a few hours.

The next stop is the Insitu Salon on Irving Place, where they have one night a week where the staff works together to learn new techniques.

Some people NY1 spoke to say model haircuts are the best bargain in town.

“It’s amazing. It’s a great thing,” says haircut model Beth Mangini. “You get to look nice and professional, but you don’t have to pay $150 for a haircut.”

“I’m low on money, and this is the perfect way to get a really nice cut without paying anything,” says haircut model Madelieine Russick.

Even though they are called model haircuts, you can get more than a cut. Some salons also offer color for a small fee or for free.

“With color classes, they will do anything from basic color to very trendy color, from single process color - one tone - to highlights,” says Paula Casano, the co-owner of Insitu Salon.

For color, Insitu only charges for the cost of the supplies.

After all these treatments, you'll find the stylists aren’t the only ones getting an education.

“The models actually become more educated about their own hair, so you’re getting a little more than a haircut. You’re actually learning about your hair type and what products are appropriate for your hair,” says Coby Alcantor of Bumble and Bumble.

For more information about model haircuts, call your local salon to see if they have training nights, so you can finally stop combing the city for a bargain.
