I am considering New Years Eve 2013 as a wedding date, I am curious about any obstacles I will face so wanted to share my idea. Anyone have any thoughts?

I went to one YRS ago and it was a blast! However, it wasn't at a fancy catering hall. It was more of a Knights of Columbus thing. Not sure how it would work out though b/c some people love their holidays and may decline the invitation. Also, I noticed many catering halls now are doing NYE parties so I would inquire about that if you decide to go that route. HTH

I've heard NYE Weddings are tons of fun!!
It's an excuse to dress up and you have somewhere fun to go to for the night w/free food & drinks.... I'd love to go to a New Years wedding! haha

I agree. While I would LOVE to go to a NYE wedding, some people might not want to give up their holiday. Some spend it with family and friends. Some might have kids that aren't invited to your wedding and don't want to leave their kids when the ball drops, but others might be excited to have a night out.
When planning your wedding you have to remember to make 2 people happy, DH and yourself. Don't worry about what people are going to say. If it's not on NYE, people will complain because it's on a Sunday or in the month of March or because of the time of day or because it's someone's birthday. You cannot make everyone happy. You will learn that planning a wedding brings out the ugly in people. A NYE wedding would be AWESOME and I'll volunteer right now to be a guest!
As for catering halls using them for parties, if they have an option to get paid to through a party of lose money to through their own party, chances are they will take your money and book that day instead.

My future BIL and SIL have 2 weddings to attend this NYE! They have to split them up, b/c they are very good friends of both of them....so the bad part is, they have to go to the weddings separately. I can find out how they are for you!

Seems like it would be a great time. I would love to go to one.
Best piece of advise has already been given, make your FH and yourself happy, that's what matters most.

I wanted a New Years Eve engagement party but there was no time to plan so my vote is to do it. If you guys love the date then I say go for it. It also gives two reasons every year to celebrate!

Like the other posts have said - do what makes you and FH happy. The only thing EXTRA that I would consider is having it in a location that is also a hotel so that no one is driving or some sort of transportation.

Re: Thoughts on a New Years Eve Wedding for 2013?
Hi!! Im getting married this New years eve! Ive heard nothing but great things from people who got married on this day and from people who went to weddings on new years-- and if lands during the weekend it ends up working out really nice!! Only thing is you WILL have a hard time with the older people with traveling that day. We have two hotel Blocks with shuttle service to try to avoid all of this but some guests really dont feel comfortable traveling at all. We also allowed all children just because we did not want to tell a parent they cant choose to see their kids after the ball drops. We left that choice up to them.. majority of our guest looked at it as a night out and opted to leave the kids home. Others are bringing them and i think its great. You will also have to heard ' Holiday pricing' with vendors -- workers get paid time and a half for that night so when someones limo or other vendor is alot less expensive yours will be a little higher. You also have to think of Hats and horns and all t he new years eve stuff.. Im playing out my whole wedding as a wedding then when 11:30 comes everyone can start getting ready for new years.
I will say this everyone who is coming is looking forward to partying!!
Just remember its a party holiday -- so why not it be a wedding-- 2 birds one stone in my eyes. everyone always says they want to do something and it usually falls through-- what betterway to have all your family and friends in one room that night. But dont go by me i have to be positive about NYE weddings lol!!!
Good luck-- I have 10 days to go but if i can help you out with anything please feel free to ask :)

Re: Thoughts on a New Years Eve Wedding for 2013?
Congrats... your wedding is just around the corner! Thanks so much, this is VERY helpful!! I didnt think about that part with inviting kids, but it makes sense to at least give parents the option. I really like the idea of playing it out at a wedding majority of the day/night, then turning it into the big NYE party.
Did you find that the reception prices were higher due to the date? I have not started calling places yet, but I was hoping that because it is a week day and during the winter it might be less than average, but probably just wishful thinking.
Thanks again for all the helpfull info!!!

Definitely cheaper... however people may resent you because they have traditions that they do and won't be able to cause of your wedding... or may skip your wedding!
I have 12/31/2012 as my date on here... but that's just cause I'm first looking at venues now and they make you put a dad LOL
