Re: thyroids

Omg, thyroid cancer, you are ok right? I had to be tested my thyroid was spazn out. it was over active very badly on my blood test but i was gaining weight 40 lbs in 6 months to be exact and had all symptons of an under active thyroid- I had to go for all kinda blood test but luckily about 3 months after I had an radioactive iodine scan and uptake my thyroid went back to normal and the weight is now coming off- thank god. I still have 30 to go by the time my thyroid was through I had gained 55lbs. I went from 127 to about 178. Now Im 165 thanks to south beach lol. but at least now the weight is coming off- no matter what I did WW nutritionist the weight didnt come off- my brother had an active at the same time and lost weight looked very sickly and he too after the scan and uptake it went to borderline levels. Please let us know if you need anything we are here for you.

Re: thyroids

I'm fine now...thank you I had thyroid cancer 2 years ago. I had been having it checked for about 8 years. I kept losing my voice during college, and found that I had nodules on my thyroid that were rubbing on my vocal chords. I finally had a biopsy done and that's when they found the cancerous cells. I had my thyroid removed, and was treated with radiation. Each year, I then had a whole body scan to make sure the cancer hadn't returned or spread. It's been 2 years, and I've passed both scans...so I'm free for 5 years now It was a lot to go through, but today I'm totally fine and you can hardly see the scar.

Glad to hear you're doing good too. The weight loss thing has been pretty tricky for me too. But it's actually been better now that I'm on Synthroid.

Re: thyroids

november - i went through the same thing with thyroid cancer too... just wondering who your doctors were... I had my surgery 5 years ago so I'm do for a scan in 2 years (boo hoo!) I hate having those.

Hearing that something is wrong with your thyroid can be scary, but in the end its no big deal... you just take a small little pill every day.

Re: thyroids

Wow, before my surgery I never knew or heard of anyone with thyroid cancer. Now I keep meeting people everywhere who either know someone who had it, or had it themselves. It's crazy. I know what you mean about it being easy now. Sometimes I feel bad even saying I'm a cancer survivor. For me, it was gone before I even realized it. And the treatment was pretty painless, just felt like I got run over by a truck for a few days. But now I'm fine. I'm going to FM you too because I have a couple of other questions

ETA: My drs. are Karen Schwartz (endorinologist), Kenneth Scioscia (ENT/surgeon), and Donald Margouleff (Nuclear medicine)

Re: thyroids

My friend had thyroid cancer too. I thought it was so rare. I can't believe how many of you have had it. My sister is bugging out too bc she went to her OB/GYN and found out her thyroid is enlarged. She went for a sonogram and now she has to see an endicrinologist. I'm supposing she may have the same problem as you ladies. Scary stuff.

I have an EXTREMELY underactive thyroid also. Please feel free to FM me if you have any questions. If you need a recommendation of a great endocronolgist in Nassau let me know.

I know it is scary but hypothyroidism is completely treatable.

Re: thyroids

Just wanted to add that my dad had the same thing last year. They took out his thyroids and he had to take an iodine pill to hopefully kill any remaining cancer. He goes back in a few months where they will scan his body again and make sure its all gone.

Re: thyroids

You will be fine. I know its easy for me to say, but my mom went through this too. Her thyroid was underactive and they 'killed' it with radiation. She;s doing well now and you know you can ask me anytime about how she's doing and what the next steps are.
