Not to offend anyone who had this, but what do we think of this??? I absolutely DO NOT want the bar tenders to have tipping glasses/bowls, etc anywhere at my wedding. The guests and ourselves are paying so much money that I think it is extremely tacky for our guests to feel as if they have to pay money every time they get a drink. How do you ladies feel??
We went to a wedding on Saturday and FH had to keep running to the store to get dollar bills.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
i 100% agree with you!!! there is no need for the bartenders to put out a tip jar. if people choose to leave a few dollars, that is up to them, but i do not want it to be 'forced' on people.

I agree, but I think that it is customary for the bar tender to put out a tip jar. I dont know if you can request that they dont?

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
The bartenders at my hall do not have a tip glass on the bar or behind the bar. If the guests want to tip the bartender you are more than welcome to but with a glass it looks like they are forced to do it and the Manor East does not allow that.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
i agree that i find it tacky, and many times it stops me from going up to get another drink
my reception is at manor east and one of the things the manager told me is that they will not put tip jars out, if people want to tip them then the bartender will slip it in his pocket, not display it

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
Why tip every time you go up? Tip at the end of the night if there is a tip glass. A $5 bill at the end of the night from a person is fine, I think, if there was a tip glass.
I don't know if it would bother me or not. Let's put it this way - I think alot of my OOT guests will tip because they are used to a cash bar and they would normally tip then. So they probably would do the same at my wedding even though we are not having a cash bar. And if not, then if I hear the bartender was good (and he'll have to be at my wedding as there'll be alot of drinkers) then I'll slip him some extra $. If he sucked, then no extra.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
I think the hosts of the party (bride and groom or bride & grooms families) should be tipping the bartenders at the end of the party, not the guests.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
We specified that we do not want tip jars on the bar at the wedding.
It is up to the guest to decide if they want to tip or not, like tipping is in every situation since it is not mandatory.
I am sorry your FH felt like he had to run in and out of the wedding like that.

I'm pretty sure (now that I think back) that our banquet manager informed us that there would be no tip jars displayed on the bar but I will have to double check.

I think it's way tacky too. It's not like at regular bars they always have those jars. If they get a tip, they put in in their pocket (or something). People are going to tip/not tip regardless of a jar and I am surprised halls accept it.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
Hey, if the catering hall already included the 18% gratuity to your bill i don't think there shuold also be a jar. If that's not the case, then I agree the bride/groom and/or the parents should be the ones to tip. My hall already added tip and we are planning on giving just the Maitre D something at the end of the party

My hall is the same as NYLisa (same day too) and Butterfly20 so they said best. Our bartendars will not have a tip jar

I agree - no tip jars! I think we are ALL paying enough in gratuities!

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
I agree it is tacky to put a bowl or jar up but I wanted to clear one thing up. The bartenders do not see any of the 18% gratuity we pay to the hall. My friends sister works for one of the halls and fills her in on the scoop that goes on and she told us that most of the service people do not see much of the 18% gratuity.
As a former bartender do I think its nice to give the bartender a tip, sure. I don think its up to the family to give that tip as well. I personally will give something only b/c I was in that profession but i know most of my family and friends will tip the bartender and not be offended that have to pay something. Every party or wedding I have gone to, I tipped the bartender. But I leave the tip right on the bar or hand it to the guy/girl and they then could put i wherever they want.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
At weddings, we tip the bartender the first time we go up, like $10 or $20 bucks, and then that's it. They usually remember what you are drinking and then you don't have to tip each time. Even if you tip them $5 bucks. Let's face it, it's a wedding, they have to serve you and they are going to be nice, regardless of whether or not you tip. Tip bowls can be tacky. But take it from someone who just got married, you will totally not care one way or the other and neither will your guests. Just my 2 cents.

Re: TIP glasses/bowls the bar at wedding
I do the same as CutieLipps-give the bartender $10-$20 in the beginning of the night, and usually when the bartender sees us coming our drinks are already made.
I agree that tip jars are tacky, the bartender at my brothers wedding and my engagement party both had them out, and my father went over there and had them removed. I think people will tip regardless, from what I hear the bartender at my e-party made a killing!!!!
