Tip Jar??

Our bartender (a friend of ours) asked if he could put out a tip jar on the bar. FH and I thought it was fine since we have seen one at many a wedding, but my mom thinks it is ubber tacky. Your thoughts?

I think putting a jar out is a little much. Many wedding guests are going to tip him even if there is no jar.

I'd plan on tipping him yourself and letting guests tip if they want to on top of that. I wouldn't put a jar out personally.

I don't think it's tacky because a lot of weddings have them, but at the same time, you are already paying A LOT of money for gratuity... so by them having a tip jar, they are kind of getting paid twice. My sister made it a point not to allow tip jars at her wedding for that reason!

...and even if there isn't a tip jar, some people will still tip. I know at every wedding we go to, my FH always gives the BT a big tip in the beginning of the night so that he'll 'take care of us!' I think the BT would take care of us either way because that's what he's there for, but whatever makes FH happy!

Just make sure he doesn't leave it overflowing with dollars on the bar....have him empty it every once in a while and leave a few bucks in there so people know what its for....

I don't think I've ever been to a wedding where there wasn't one! That being the case, I've never even had an opinion about whether they're tacky or not - I just kind of expect to see one there...

I dont like tip jars at weddings. Bartenders are part of waitstaff and waitstaff is generally included in on the gratuity. For those who want to tip, they will do so regardless, but there was not one tip jar out at any of the bars or in the restrooms.

I guess it's okay but it's not really necessary. Those who will tip, will do it anyway, and those who won't do it still won't do it even with a jar there.

I've seen them at every wedding I've been to. If you want to I think its fine. Actually I think its very nice, it shows your thinking of the bartender. I always tip even when drinks are free.

For me this was a big no-no. I specifically said that I did not want this, and that I would make sure to take very good care of the bartenders and the bathroom attendants. I never have money on me at weddings (esp. when I go to the restroom, I always leave my purse with DH at the table) and then I feel guilty when I don't tip the bathroom attendant. JMHO
