Tip Jar??

Original post by FutureMrsRice

Our bartender (a friend of ours) asked if he could put out a tip jar on the bar. FH and I thought it was fine since we have seen one at many a wedding, but my mom thinks it is ubber tacky. Your thoughts?

I requsted that the tip jar be kept under the counter, not on the bar.
In my circle, we generously tip the bartender once at the beginning of the evening, instead of every time he or she pours drinks.

I do not like the idea of a tip jar...my RH actually doesn't put them out. The bride & groom take car of the bartenders.
If a guest wants to tip the bartender then they should hand it to them NOT leave it on the bar.
My BM actually said if she sees any tips laying on the bar she takes them and keeps them
JMO---I think they are tacky!!

I have to go with tacky also. Like the other girls said, it's not like if there's no tip jar people won't tip. I worked in catering for a couple of years - trust me.... the bartenders make $$$!! I don't think you have to worry about your friend not making any tips that night. With or without the jar.

I was told that we are supposed to take care of the bartenders tips so they are not supposed to have a tip jar out. However, seeing how he is a friend of yours, there is no nice way to tell him he can't. So I would not worry about it.

I think putting a jar out is a little much. Many wedding guests are going to tip him even if there is no jar.

I'd plan on tipping him yourself and letting guests tip if they want to on top of that. I wouldn't put a jar out personally.

I agree.

I agree I don't think I can remember a wedding that didn't have a tip jar at the bar!!

Our BM says the bartender tip is NOT included in the 18% gratuity they charge, so if we're not planning on tipping the bartender, we should leave a tip jar out. He discussed it like it's done all the time.

I'm spending enough before the 18%, so I don't think I'll die of embarrassment if there's a little pumpkin basket on the bar.

eh... I wouldn't do it.... we always tip bartenders no matter where we are wether they have a tip jar or not- and so do most people. Either they will tip or they won't- but I don't think the jar will help if the guest isn't planning on tipping anyway.

I would say tacky. Your guests are your guests and they should not feel pressured into tipping. My FH and I always tip the bartender anyway, but out of common courtesy, not out of feeling guilty because there is a tip jar. My father has forbid all tip jars at my wedding and said he would settle it all out at the end of the night and make sure everyone gets taken care of.

I dont like tip jars at weddings. Bartenders are part of waitstaff and waitstaff is generally included in on the gratuity. For those who want to tip, they will do so regardless, but there was not one tip jar out at any of the bars or in the restrooms.

Actually, you're supposed to tip the bartender separately, a percentage of the liquor portion of the bill, at most RHs. They aren't considered waitstaff for gratuity purposes.
