Tip jars @ events..

Tip jars @ events..

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. If we are already paying for an open bar and gratuity then why the heck are the bartenders asking for tips from guests at an event? nN I went to my mom's best friend's bday party at a hall recently and I saw this. I am praying that I don't see this at my e-party or wedding. Have you experienced this?

We have our tasting tomorrow night and I think I might bring this up. I feel like even I have been to an open bar and didn't have all the drinks I wanted b/c I didn't feel like shelling out a tip. I dont want my guests to feel that way. The party is already costing us over 6,000 so I def want ppl to enjoy.

thats exactly how I feel .....there is nothing wrong with sticking to your guns about what you want !!! make it clear how you feel and if you see one ask your BM to have it removed ....nothing bridezilla about it just something you dont like!!!

Well being some one that works off tips I understand ... Some people dont get paid that much and the gratuity has to be split umungst a certain amount of people and the open bar fee per person obviously goes to the owner so say the gratuity for the party is 500 but there are 7 people working the party do you think that 70 something dollars is good enough for the service that some people do ... and that goes before you come in to set up and after the party leaves to clean up the mess .. I know poeple choose their jobs but I always tip because I know how it is... dont you like to get bonuses at your job .. well some of these resturaunt owners are scum bags.

thanks for bringing it up because i dont want the jar either. ...its a wedding

If gratuity is included in the price of your reception they bar definetly should NOT have a tip jar publiclly displayed. Most people (at least most people I know) who are guests usually give the bartenders tips anyway, even if it is open bar. There is no need for them to beg for more money!

the bride and groom, or their families, can then decide what is appropriate as a tip. Wedding guests should not see anything that suggests a request for money. If they want to tip, they can but I do not like to see a tip jar and I asked not to have any at my wedding. It turns out that my hall does not put them out anyway.

I agree. I spoke w/my RH and they assured me there would be no tip jars out on the bar. If you're so opposed to it, you should do the same. good luck!

I purposely do not tip when I see a tip jar out... aka dunkin doughnuts.... i think that is horrible thing to do! As for bartenders, I tip them anyways so theres no need for the jar..... FH & I actually give a bartender like 20 bucks when we get our first drinks at weddings and they personally take care of us for the night! They rem that sh*t and appreciate it! (FH was a bartender in a catering hall so he understands how things work )

I would mention it-MOST RHs will not allow this.
This was a big deal to us so it was one of the first things we mentioned. However, guests are able to tip the bartenders as the wish, I would just ask that if the bartenders are tipped they dont leave the tip on the bar. This is usually the cue for ALL guests to feel they need to tip

I hate tip jars!! Whether they be at a RH or at Starbucks, etc. It is your job. I don't keep a tin can in the front of my classroom asking for tips for doing my job.

I feel the same as you. My mom mentioned this at our RH and threy said there wouldn't be tip jars. If there are, I will ask for them to be put away.

awe, let them keep there tip jars out. I know from experience....Catering halls, do NOT pay the bartenders that well at all. Especially if they are giving up there friday or saturday night to work, Trust me if you want great service for your guest, you dont want to mess with the tip jar lol Im actually going to throw my bartender a 50 and say please do the best job you can....great service at the bar is KEY!!!!!

If you dont want them to keep a tip jar out...then throw them a tip on your own. Trust me the money you are paying is divided by so many people they only see a small percentage...they work hard!!!

We're leaving the tip jar out. My tips are already over $1600, without the bartender. Since most people tip at weddings anyway, I don't see why there shouldn't be a place to put it, rather than going directly in the bartenders pocket (which looks worse, IMO).

I used to work at a country club, and waitressed tons of weddings - and though we all LOVE getting tips! I totally supported the policy of NO tip jar. I think it's rude to basically ask guests at the wedding to tip them. Plenty of people tip regardless, based on the good service at their descretion, but as a guest at a wedding you shouldn't feel obligated to. And, that's really what a jar is saying, IMO.

Definitely ask the RH, they may already have the 'no tip jar' policy, but if not you can request not to have it.

your service fee goes towards their salary not their tip. I think ppl get confused about the whole gratuity tax or service tax. They dont get paid that much and like i said they dont get a tip out of the money you pay your RH

even if there was no tip jar out i would still tip them if i went to an event

No but you get paid a full salary, they don't. They make their 'real' money in tips. Whether you want the jar out or not is a personal decision, but you should always tip service industry workers.
