Our RH does not allow tip jars on the bars, and if they did I would request to not have them out. At any events I do (personally and professionally) I never allow tip jars to be out. I know that everyone can use the extra money but there is a time and place where tip jars are appropriate IMO. I know my guests will tip if they want and I have no problem if the bartenders or servers accept graciously and then put it out of sight. I feel a jar out will make my guests feel like they HAVE to tip when they don't.

I am a bartender ( on hiatus right now) and tips are how you survive. I've worked in catering halls and I know they tell you gratuity is included, but we don't get much at all.We live on tips.I have a family to support. I don't think it's appropriate to have some huge overflowing tip jar (that is tacky) I do feel it would be except able to have a small wine glass in the corner of the bar with one bill in it. But again I am a bit bias.

I hate tip jars!! Whether they be at a RH or at Starbucks, etc. It is your job. I don't keep a tin can in the front of my classroom asking for tips for doing my job.
No but you get paid a full salary, they don't. They make their 'real' money in tips. Whether you want the jar out or not is a personal decision, but you should always tip service industry workers.
Also with your job along with a full salary you also receive an outstanding benefits package.Whereas most people in the service industry get NOTHING in that department.

your service fee goes towards their salary not their tip. I think ppl get confused about the whole gratuity tax or service tax.
This is very true. I was a catering waitress at CLM, and I never saw a penny of the gratuity. Granted, I got paid much more than a regular waitress (I think it was $10 per hour, and that was 10 years ago), so I wasn't really working off tips. However, I was in high school - if that were my full time job I don't think I could live on $10 per hour. It was always appreciated when we got a little something.
I'm not sure exactly how it works for the bartenders, but I'm sure it's not all that different. That being said, I understand not wanting to see a tip jar, although I don't think it would bother me all that much.

Absolutely NO tip jars. I asked that question at every reception hall I went to. My reception hall won't even let the bartenders leave the dollars on the bar. They have to put them away as soon as someone leaves one.

They had it at my E-Party - DROVE ME CRAZY!!! Simply ask the Maitre D to make sure it's not there and to remove it if you see it at your wedding...

Re: Tip jars @ events..
The bartenders usually make a set amount for the night and its is like $70 for an 8 hour day or something..so the tips help.
But, I dont like when they have jars out. I dont think the RH should allow it and most dont that I have seen. But I always tip anyway.

The bartenders don't receive the gratuity that is built into your RH bill. If you don't want a tip jar, then you have to take care of them yourselves. You can also request the tip jar be placed below the bar. Most of my guests know how to take care of the waitstaff and bartenders, (we are a bit older) but we will still allow the tip jar to be on the bar.

i'm going to request that there be no tip jar out. I will give you a generous tip. you dont need it to make my guests feel like they need to. if they offer to w/ no jar (which most will) then that is fine.

even if there was no tip jar out i would still tip them if i went to an event
yes this is what I was going to say most of the time their tip is not included. My guest had no problem doing this because it is customary for us to do this. Even if the jar was not there my guest would still tip. If you are concerned about this maybe you should just give them a tip yourself and ask for them not to leave the jar out. But every wedding I have been to I have seen the jar out or if the jar is not out and someone offers them a tip they still take it.

I agree also. Even at the wedding of the year they had a little tip glass out for the bartenders.

I purposely do not tip when I see a tip jar out... aka dunkin doughnuts.... i think that is horrible thing to do! As for bartenders, I tip them anyways so theres no need for the jar..... FH & I actually give a bartender like 20 bucks when we get our first drinks at weddings and they personally take care of us for the night! They rem that sh*t and appreciate it! (FH was a bartender in a catering hall so he understands how things work )
The Maitre Ds are aksing up front for tips also 3-5 buck wow that is alot. I did not leave that because we just could not afford that but we did leave him a generous tip but my God what this coming too.

Re: Tip jars @ events..
put my comments on a 08 post.
Tip jars are for catering halls or places that pay a set rate to their bartenders that are typically paid lower so that they work for tips. A service charge does not AT ALL go to the bartender your lucky if it gets to even the people serving your guests. If the bride and groom covers the tips it should state it at the bar so the guests know not to tip. I actually feel guilty if I don't leave something behind and I like to know when I should or should not tip as a guest.
I have no problems with a tip jar why? because you get a better service because the person is working for the tip. The only exception as I said is if they are prepaid a tip (outside of the general service charge)
