Hi just wondering if anyone had to deal with this? I thought the gratuities were supposed to cover tips? Do guests have to bring money tip the bartendars too?
Does your hall have tip jars? Is that typical for halls to solicit tips from guests?
Thanks!

yes I think it is typical for halls to solicit tips from guests at the bar. I wouldn't worry about it. Guests can tip or not.

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
my friend works at a RH and she told me this is the deal...
She gets paid the same amount that a waitress at a restaurant would ($4-$5 and hour). Whomever the person having the party is usually tips waitresses $20 (I don't remember if it was per night or per table that night) Then if someone at the table offers them a tip they are allowed to take it. Basically the tipping at the table is where they can make the most money...
I am pretty sure most places allow bartenders to put a tip cup out probably for the same reason.

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
we just had this issue at my sister's wedding. You would think with the gratuties you pay on top of all the night of tipping that has to be done, that these people would be covered! We thought that tip jar was tacky and I plan on making that point when I meet with my hall.

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
So the reception hall's gratuities doesn't go to the waitstaff/bartendars? Isn't that wrong!? We have to tip the hall and the waitstaff/bartendars too? And then our guests has to tip the bartendars too if there's a tip jar?
Isn't that triple tipping?

I think you can ask them to put the jars away. Guest should have the option to tip if they would like, but they should not feel obligated.

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
these people make 4-5 dollars an hour..sometimes LESS...they LIVE on the tips people give them...plus you have to remember that those gratuities get split between all the people working the day of the wedding so by the time they get anything its even LESS...even their tips get put into a big pool and get split between everyone so its not even that they get to keep all of that money either..
if you don't like the tip jar then just don't tip...its not forced upon anyone...its optional...i know plenty of people who've been to weddings with a tip jar and they either tipped or didn't...it was that simple...and none of them thought it was tacky
personally i'm not sure if my place does it but if they do it doesn't bother me...these people are working hard for the money they earn and if they want to leave a little cup out that's fine by me

I understand what you are saying but you have to pay for the tips before hand so it's sort of like double dipping, no matter how much they're getting paid. You go to a restuarant and if it's a big party then the tip is included already in the bill. No one then goes and retips them over that amount... it's what's included and that's it. I said it was tacky because my FMIL and 4 other guests commented on it, so obviously it didn't go unnoticed to some. JMO

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
I tend to think that this tipping thing is ridiculous... I am by no means cheap...but these halls are scr@wing there own staff...If I am paying 19% gratuity who does that go to...same with the limo company who charged me 20% gratuity and then sasid I should tip the limo driver on top of that...they call it gratuity so that no one fights it...but the truth is that these things are fees..not tips and this is where the confusion comes in...

We made a point of telling our hall, the BM, the Matre d, and the DOC that we did not want tip jars and we would give a nice tip ourselves ...if guests wanted to tip the bartender or wait staff that is their business but we did not want the jars out...HOWEVER, there were still tip jars.

i understand where you are coming from and i agree its rediculous...i just feel bad because the staff is the one that gets royally scre wed over because of it...my cousin works as a waitress and she hardly sees any of the tip money people leave her...even when its a big group and the gratuity is included... because she has to put it into the tip pool at the end of the night and it gets split between everyone that worked that night...and she busts her *** just trying to survive from paycheck to paycheck..and then on top of the lousy pay her tips get taxed! Which is silly and unfair.
but like i said..i understand what you're trying to say and i agree its silly because the staff should get paid the normal minimum wage..or more...because that job is not fun

When we mentioned that we did not want tip jars out, our BM nearly fell off his seat. There was no way he would allow a tip jar of any kind at one of his functions - call it snobby but that's what we wanted and we did have a hefty tip across the board. What people did on their own was fine, but neither DHand I or the BM at the temple wanted jars out.

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
I told my BM not tip jars for bartenders, valet, bathroom attendants, etc... I think they are really tacky.
Knowing my guests, they will want to take care of the bartender - which is fine - But I will flip if I see a tip jar out to solicit though....

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
WM usually puts them out but you can request that they not.... I left them out b/c it's usually the guys that go to the bar for drinks and most times they like to leave a tip anyway.

ETA: At first I thought it was tacky esp when you pay so much money to have your reception at a nice place, but truthfully, it's not that big a deal. Most people were being served at their table so they never saw the bar. I just didn't think it was worth stressing over.

Actually. many reception halls will not allow a tip jar. Tips are accepted if offered, but the hall should not allow for the blatant solicitation of a tip by the staff.

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
I used to work at one of these popular reception halls. I never got tips after each event, but I was paid significantly more than restaurant waiters/waitresses. This may not be the same at all banquet halls, but I was making at least $7 more a hour at a reception hall than I did when I was a waitress at a restaurant.

ETA: I was a bartender for 13 years & Dh worked in a bar as well. My guests did tip the staff, including the wait staff, but no one had a jar, not even the coat room person. We also tipped on top of what they got from our guests & their pay.
