Hi just wondering if anyone had to deal with this? I thought the gratuities were supposed to cover tips? Do guests have to bring money tip the bartendars too?
Does your hall have tip jars? Is that typical for halls to solicit tips from guests?
Thanks!

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
I have to say, I have been in the wedding business for about 8 years, both at very expensive and not so expensive halls as well as owning my own staffing company. I know that you typical waitress makes the minimum wage for servers which is between $3.10 - $4 per hour. This is NOT the same as what catering waitstaff/bartenders are paid. The going rate (and trust me as I base my staff's pay on the norm) is $25 per hour. You can find halls that pay as little as $15 and as much as $40 but the average catering server is making $25 per hour plus tip.
Don't believe the hype. No career waitress would work for $4 at a wedding where many people dont tip if they could get a 4 table section in a resturant where they can turn and burn the table for tips.
The Service industry is split into two categories: Resturant and Catering. The pay is different as is the skill set needed.

I tend to think that this tipping thing is ridiculous... I am by no means cheap...but these halls are scr@wing there own staff...If I am paying 19% gratuity who does that go to...same with the limo company who charged me 20% gratuity and then sasid I should tip the limo driver on top of that...they call it gratuity so that no one fights it...but the truth is that these things are fees..not tips and this is where the confusion comes in...
I agree!! We all work hard for our $$ to and we are asked to pay gratuity up front.. They need to spell out who that covers then, so i can tip the people it excludes.

We made a point of telling our hall, the BM, the Matre d, and the DOC that we did not want tip jars and we would give a nice tip ourselves ...if guests wanted to tip the bartender or wait staff that is their business but we did not want the jars out...HOWEVER, there were still tip jars.
When we mentioned that we did not want tip jars out, our BM nearly fell off his seat. There was no way he would allow a tip jar of any kind at one of his functions - call it snobby but that's what we wanted and we did have a hefty tip across the board. What people did on their own was fine, but neither DHand I or the BM at the temple wanted jars out.
I had a temple wedding also. There were no tip jars. My dad would have been VERY POed if there were, and he made it clear to me that he would have it removed if there was one. If people want to tip, that is fine, but they are our guests and any 'reminder' is tacky, IMO. I've had many friends who waited tables and I know that the tips help them, but I still feel that the tip jar is tacky.

No tip jars at my wedding. I just don't like them. To each his own. Not having tip jars doesn't mean people won't tip. Usually people just leave money on the bar if they want to, just like they would in a regular bar. Then the tip jar isn't staring them in the face and they can tip at their discretion. JMO though

That's what I thought too, I mean, they need more competent people at these reception halls so they aren't gonna pay them 3-5 bucks/hour to serve ppl when they won't be the one getting the tip directly...
The halls won't wanna risk hiring less competent staff and having their reputation sullied if the staff aren't working up to standards...
:) Thanks for clarifying!

Re: Tip Jars At Reception Hall ?
ive never seen a tip jar out at a wedding - but i always tip the bartenders anyway.
give them a $20 at the beginning of CH - ask if they are going to be in the reception hall of course - then as soon as I start walking over they already have made my drink
