I myself am wondering the same thing! I heard that the maitre'd expected something crazy like $5 per person. Plus you have to tip all the vendors and budget for extra fees like 'cake cutting'. Good luck and let me know what you find out!

Re: Tip Question

I know my maitre'd tip was automatically added into the price from the RH. The cake cutting... the RH usually charges you for this? I should ask about that! To me, this is nuts, i'll cut the cake myself lol.

ok, not to be mean or anything but why is it necessary to tip vendors??? I mean we're paying them a big chunk of money. I just don't get it..sorry!

Because it's the right thing to do. I know some vendors charge atrocious amounts for their services, but the actual 'working man' who performs the actual service and works their butt off to make sure your day is amazing deserves a tip. It's like, if you go to a totally overpriced restaurant and spend a ton of money on dinner and drinks, you should/would still tip your waiter!!

I agree completely with you.

Also if you are having a winter wedding make sure to tip your coat check girl! I myself, and friends of mine, have worked in coat check in catering halls, and the guests for whatever reason never think to tip us. Plus they come to me asking for change to tip the valet and then stiff me. This is particularly aggravating when I hand them back a very expensive fur coat.

Sorry to make such a huge stink about this but my former position is pretty much always overlooked. I generally over tip when I get my coat back but I'd say $1/person is ok.

What people often forget is that coat check people also get paid a reduced rate during party hours because management assumes we get tipped. If you do plan on tipping have a sign made up that says you've already taken care of it so that your guests don't tip them as well.

I do agree that it seems ridiculous to have to tip after paying an exorbitant fee for their services but what you must remember is that these people usually make pennies as their salaries and depend off of these tips in order to feed their families. Plus when you tip someone you are essentially thanking them for their services. Now, if you are honestly not pleased with their services you still should tip them but I wouldn't tip as much.

About the matre d', $5 per person is standard for them. They are in charge of overseeing the entire wedding and ensuring that your day goes off perfectly. For $5 a person you're guaranteeing both your happiness and that of your guests.
