One of my family members is in the 'wedding' business and we were talking about tipping, and he said not to tip the DJ, Video or, Photo people... I am not sure what to do not, he's argument is that your already paying him for his services why tip him if he is getting paid for doing 'his' job escpeccialy if he owns his own company. He said to deff. Tip the Matrid'e and Bridal Attendiant but no one else..
Now how do you know they own there own business?
I don't know what to do... I feel like if I don't tip them they will think I am cheap or something...

Re: Tipping?
Personally, I feel, if you are never going to see them again, why tip them (except maitre d' and bridal attendant)? Not to say I won't tip but I just find it excessive.
You don' t tip your laundry lady for cleaning, or your coworkers for doing their work do you?
Besides, they are overcharging as it is for their services just because it's a wedding function.

Yes, I guess he makes a good point. I never thought about it.

Re: Tipping?
It depends who you use. If you are using a larger company, the person filming your wedding or your DJ is not seeing a large portion of what you are paying. They are getting an hourly rate much lower than you are paying. I do think it's appropriate to tip in that instance. You don't necessarily have to tip 15 or 20%, mind you. In those instances, I would probably tip a flat amount, not a percentage -- since those services are SO expensive anyway.

Re: Tipping?
The matre d? Why tip him & not the waitstaff? They will be the ones actually serving your guests, not him... when you go to a resturaunt do you tip your waiter or your hostess who seated you?
As fo the other vendors, if they own the business no tips are necessary, but if they are merely employees, tips would mean a lot to them, & not for nuthin' they do work in the service industry...

Our hall told us up front that the maitre d' was not included in the gratuity and it was at our discretion to tip him. We did not tip him $3-$5 like it is believed to be the norm but we gave him a very nice tip.
There was an article on tipping on this site. I will try to find it.

Re: Tipping?
I don't think tipping should be a requirement. If you feel your vendor went above and beyond before the wedding and during the wedding then you might want to give a tip.

I agree - I am really sick of people EXPECTING tips, if someone DESERVES a tip, I am a generous tipper, but if all you did was your job - FORGET IT. I also think the waitstaff deserves a tip more than the maitre' d - maybe because I don't know what this person is doing yet? What the heck is this 18% service charge if no one seems to get it but the hall??

Re: Tipping?
The hall told me that I should not tip the waitstaff/bartenders only becuase my guests will be tipping them trough out the night, and i think the matride s tip is good cuase he takes care of everything and anything that goes wrong and he splits the tip 4 ways, him asst, head chef and asst. chef but as far as the vendors i am possitive that the video and dj runs his own company i am just not sure about the photo...

I dont think tipping should be included, since you are tipping on the service that you receive...hopefully my vendore give great service and they will leave very happy!!!
