Tipping????

Tipping????

Hi everyone.... for those of you who are getting married soon can you please give me a clue in terms of tipping? I booked my photographer and he said that there's a mandatory 20% tip to be given the day of the wedding. My total package costs $3500 so I have to give him approximately $700. Does that seem right to you? What if I don't like the pictures when I get them? and what if they do a horrible job with my album because I didn't tip well? I'm so confused. Please help.
I already booked with a $250 deposit, but I'm thinking twice about them. Is not like they have good reviews...well its a long story. If I have to loose my deposit to get good pictures I will.

um that's ridiclious

you are NOT required to do ANYTHING unless its in your contract.

review your photography contract---if there is nothing about mandatory tipping, then you don't have to. it sounds to me that the photog is trying to get extra $$$ out of you

did your actual PHOTOGRAPHER tell you this? is there someone higher up like the owner of hte company you can talk to. cause i really think that is shady business practices

yea im confused as to why he is demanding a 20% tip. thats not good. you dont have to tip at all if you dont want to.

yeah this sounds really strange to me as well. Is it in your contract???

Agree with the others - tip isn't mandatory unless that's in the contract.

Did the company owner tell you this? What does your contract say?

I was plannign on tippign them, but 20%--NO WAY!

My package with video is 7,000.

There is no way I would tip that!!

I am probably doing75.00 each.

I hate when vedors demand tips. That is rude and unprofessional. Esp. when they own the business.

I spoke to the rep of the company when i signed the contract and no she didnt even mention tip, and then she told me that i can call the actual photographer to ask him any questions and just to kinda get to know him or whatever, and when i spoke to him he said that the company leaves him the dirty job of letting me know that I have to give a 20% tip. when i mentioned it to the rep that gave me his # she said that I don't have to its totally up to me. But....I feel like they don't really work together so maybe he wont put all his effort if his tip sux. And no is not even mentioned in the contract either. By the way...my photographer is the pros...and they are a little strange. I dunno what to do.

None of my vendors told me I must tip them a certain amount, or at all.

It is generally your call on how much tip.
$700 is madness!

700 is alot for any tip
First of all if its not in your contract you dont HAVE to give him a dime...secondly, you wouldnt tip him until the day is over...so he shouldnt slack out on you b/c of that. I would also when all is said and done let the company know that its shady and not the right way to run a business like that

Time to think about getting a new photographer.

I would ask to CLARIFY... 700 is waaaaaay too much...

Re: Tipping????

you guys are so true. I think i'm going to loose my $250 and be at ease knowing that I dpnt have to worry about my photos and on top of that give a $700 tip. So i guess now I have to look at other photographers. Let me know which is the best one please. Thanks.....also, if anyone could tell me what their package looks like and how much they are quoted for I would greatly appreciate it. Thanx again.

I agree with everyone else! Sounds a bit ridiculous to me! I plan on tipping well but definitely NOT giving them 20% of my total!

I was told that $100.00 min is a good starting point. I was told by the office where my photographer is that I should give depending on how I think he did!

wow thats alot of money for a tip. I dont think that is right. I would look into that more.

Re: Tipping????

Yeah...everyone is saying the same and I'm just going to change my photog. I mean their prices are great and the work that they should me was wonderful, but I don't want to be wondering if I will be a lucky one or if I'm gonna be the one posting a bad review. So I will loose my 250 i guess.

Honestly I've never heard of such a thing. I would try looking for a new photographer.

I know in my photography contract there was a stipulation that read if I cancelled before 6 months I wouldn't lose my deposit. Maybe your contract says this as well?

Re: Tipping????

No my contract said I would loose it in 2 days of signing the contract....but look at this.....I went to see them and I spoke to the rep she was really nice and everything and I told her I didn't want to sign anything yet because I had to look around. She said that was no problem. She gave me the contract that I had not yet signed (though there was not a place to sign so i dunno if they're those kinda contracts that you get a copy and thats it-no signature involved) and she said that if I ever decide that i could give me deposit over the phone-like a over the phone check or something, which that's what i did. But i never signed anything. Do you think that gives me the right to ask if i get my deposit back since i didn't signed anything? I'm thinking probably not because for my florist the contract didn't require a signature or anything. I just gave him a deposit and he gave me a receipt with a copy of everything we spoke about.

Tipping is for good service...but if you don't get to see the pictures until weeks after the wedding, how can you determine how much to tip the photographer?
