tipping?

sorry i've started so many threads today...i'm just burning with questions!!

so...i've read on here that if a vendor is the owner of the company, you don't have to tip him/her. the thing is...pretty much all my vendors have their own little companies and they're the only ones who work there....so does that mean i don't have to give tips?? or was that just misguided in the first place? i took epics yesterday w/ an independent photographer and we didn't give her a tip.....should we have?? if so, should i just give her a little extra at the wedding?
