ok, so i know everyone says not to tip photo or video if they own their own company (both of mine do)...but my photographer brings a second shooter - do i tip that person? is it weird to tip 1 photographer but not the other?

I would tip the assistant.
I used to work for a photography studio and I can tell you as the assistant to the main photog, you don't paid nearly as much and you're doing the same amount of work and hours as they do. Totally unfair. I didn't get tips all the time but I definitely appreciated it when I got them. Also, if you do give the assistant a tip, be sure to had it directly to the assistant. Do not give all the tips to the main photog expecting them to split it up because they always kept the whole thing for themselves (at least that was always my experience)

it's not an assistant though, it's another freelance photographer. she teams up with other photographers who own their own business, so that's where i'm confused. i should have clarified that in the first post.
does that change your answer, or do you still think i should tip them?

hmmmm... well if she is freelance than technically she does have her own business and her fee for shooting was probably added into your package when you requested a second shooter (she she is going to get all of that anyways). So in that case I don't think I would tip.
BUT, if your main photographer brings another assistant along with her/him (like someone who helps with the lighting and then takes candids during the night) than I would tip the assistant
