Just browsing the 07 boards and thought i would mention this for weddings and future parties. I dont think most people realize this.
The tip you give to the maitre D that is SUPPOSED to be split up amongst the wait staff IS NOT given to the waiters and waitresses! At least VERY rarely!!
So whenever we have a party my parents make sure to tip them individually and give the maitre D what ever is left for his portion. My parents have gone so far as to tell the wait staff to be expecting a tip because they know they wont ever see it.
My brother used to work for the carlton for weddings all the time and never got tippied. The only tips he recieved were from people at the tables wanting drinks.
so just keep this in mind at your wedding! PLUS if the staff know they will be getting a tip they will make sure they do their best job!

i was never told it was split, i was told it is for the MD only since they oversee everything

usually it includes the waiter and waitresses tips or at least MOST people think it does and it is never given to them. they get stiffed all the time!

well, really they keep the waiters and waitresses in check make sure everyting is running smoothly, everyone's food is right, they are the manager basically

our hall said the service charge of 18% IS NOT their tip its their pay for the hours and labor yadda yadda... We are expected to tip the maitr D and the waiters at our discretion.... being former waiters both FH and myself, I beg all of you, PLEASE please tip your waiters and bartender, they really do rely on it, and definately hand it to them individually, restaurant owners not to offend anyone, are sometimes very very slimy! I've worked for about 10 restaurants in my lifetime, and never worked for one that treated the waitstaff well :( And if you give them tips early in evening, they will work even harder to anticipate your guests needs!
